Definitely legalise the pure natural weed form that hasn't been tampered with, not that super skunk crap. It has great medical benefits without any real negative side-effects, unless you overdo it. Every pain killer you take from mild Ibu profen to more heavy hitting opiates like Co-codamol (codeine) and Oxycontin (oxycodone), have side effects, some really bad. It's proven that Oxycodone, Co-codamol (high dosage) etc are highly addictive and proven to be gateway drugs to Heroin, Crack and Cocaine. There is an excellent HBO documentary on this called "Warning: This Drug Might Kill You https://www.hbo.com/documentaries/warning-this-drug-may-kill-you, it takes a look at the devastating effects of opioid addiction in the U.S., profiling four families whose lives have been decimated by addictions that all began with legitimate prescriptions to dangerous painkillers. There are other documentaries and studies proving this but sadly nothing will be done when going up against mega rich pharmaceuticals.

Going back to cannabis, it's natural, been around for thousands of years and has healing properties. I'd love to take it when my joints are inflamed or i get stiff knees from running, instead i have to take Ibuprofen which causes me heartburn.

Common ibuprofen side effects may include:
  • upset stomach, mild heartburn, nausea, vomiting;
  • bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation;
  • dizziness, headache, nervousness;
  • mild itching or rash; or.
  • ringing in your ears.
Not the only over-the-counter drug with side-effects, and won't be the last.

The response to drugs, and the path to addiction, is very much down to the individual.
I had meningitis as a kid - somehow I survived intact but suffered from serious migraine attacks throughout my teenage years. I repeatedly took high dosages of Co-codamol as that was the only thing that touched it. I've never done any drugs stronger than weed, and never really felt inclined to. The migraines subsided in my 20's and I rarely suffer from them now.
I have two good mates who smoke weed a lot - one of them shows serious symptoms of paranoia and the other none at all.
Interesting case studies.

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, like Aspirin and Naproxen. These can attack the lining of your stomach and cause problems and I don't think there is adequate warning from the medical profession regarding this. They should only be taken with food - or, if you have to take them long-term, with a drug that protects the stomach lining.

I suppose it's fair to say that nothing that changes your body chemistry can be considered entirely harmless - or entirely predictable. Alcohol turns some into happy, sociable people and others into ****ing morons.

The argument that taking weed can lead to more serious drugs is bollocks.

It's down to the individual and choices they make.

Why don't the government use the same lame argument to say don't touch alcahol or you could turn into an alcy and need to feed your habit by crime!!

Oh yes that's right it's taxed!!!

I agree, certain drugs can have different affects on people and we must be careful when taking anything. As for weed, it can affect people in different ways and some people really shouldn't take it, who are mentally unstable or susceptible to that sort of thing. But things get clouded with synthesised weed made into more potent and harmful versions. I'd like a proper large scale study into normal weed and see if this brings adverse psychological problems to individuals. But like everything else, people can abuse drugs which cause problems, the same goes for weed.

But i find it unacceptable when the medical/political establishment make out that everything sold over-the-counter/prescribed isn't harmful and make weed into some demon drug.

Diet and exercise can overcome the majority of most problems but this message isn't coming through. Instead the NHS is being swamped by issues that was not a problem in the past. The first course of action is pills, then pills and then maybe change your lifestyle if you're on deaths door. The whole system needs an overhaul before it's too late and we can start by providing herbalised medication with minimal to no side-effects if its' proven to work. Cannabis is one of those drugs that work, start by making it into a medicated form that is free for all to use.

Can't argue with any of that. <ok>

If they legalised weed they could tax it. Win-win. :)

It's all about money but the drug companies can't patent that sh1t so they can own and make a shed load of money from it. Strange when we have drugs like alcohol, cigarettes and the myriad of drugs prescribed or not that are proven to cause us harm. Damn you can't pick up a cigarette packet without seeing a horrific photo's of someone suffering from tobacco poisoning. How about reading a drug leaflet detailing all it's side-effects, it's like reading a Steven King novel. Bleeding out your anus, how the feck does that drug get passed over as safe?!?!

It's quite complex when you have huge alcohol/tobacco businesses that will lobby against it, like they have in the past (see link i've posted below). They don't want to share profits to another drug like weed, which would be an instant success if it got legalised. You can smoke that stuff, chill out and not have a headache the following morning. In fact your body and joint will feel better for it.

Inside big pharma's fight to block recreational marijuana

Pharma and alcohol companies have been quietly bankrolling the opposition to legal marijuana, raising questions about threats to market share.

Personally i always read the leaflets and am personally staggered by the number of people who don't if only because it will actually tell you how to take them plus your GP may well prescribe you with a drug that is not compatible with your existing condition(s) <yikes>

This is true, but the story is slightly more involved than that.
Many of the side-effects listed are rare, and in some cases hypothetical. The list needs to include them because if anyone should suffer from them and it can be proven that the drug company was aware but failed to list them they could have their arses sued to high heaven and back.
I'm not trying to defend them here - just offer a balanced opinion.
It's a bit like the "may contain nuts" disclaimer on things that obviously contain nuts. Just covering themselves.

to be fair to pharma.

their clinical trials and marketing authorisation process is extremely stringent so if a drug is allowed to be marketed in the EU (currently includes uk) then the weight of scientific evidence is such that the side effect of the API is outweighed by the benefit it brings.

Put it like this ibuprofin doesn't bring enough benfit to allow your entire digestive tract to be destroyed.

may contain nuts is a total get out of jail card. There are far less regulation there. its purely down to the factory makes peanuts or whatever on one line in a chocolate bar etc and crosscontamination cannot be prevented 100%

The may contain nuts is about a contaminant. the anal bleeding warning is an effect of the exact intended drug formulation.

yep but that is to some effect covered in the leaflet as it splits them into likelihood i.e. 1:100 1:1000.
mind you loved the one where the unlikely side effect was

Death <yikes>

Of course Pharma does some good with certain drugs they produce but people need to understand that not everything they produce is a miracle cure. It may stop one thing but can lead to another.

Ultimately people need to start being accountable for themselves and stop acting helpless, putting all their trust in the Medical Industrial Complex. Taking care of your health meaning a proper diet and being active should be a priority for all. Instead some people ruin their bodies and expect others to pick up the pieces.

I'm going to enjoy Greez's response to this one. :)
