I’m not sure I agree. At the time, it didn’t seem that he separated himself from Platini and Zico by such a large gap, and for as long as Messi/Ronaldo have their contemporaries.

Well it's all about opinions.

Messi and Ronaldo are both better professionals, I'll give them that. Like a lot of geniuses - and I don't use the word lightly - Maradonna had character flaws that matched the size of his talent. The brightest stars burn out soonest, and all that (like Best and Gascoigne).

He was head and shoulders above Platini and Zico imo. Are Bale and Modric that far behind Ronaldo? ****, Bale got Wales to the SF of the Euros. Messi's natural gifts are sublime and make him a joy to watch, but he doesn't win games at the highest level on his own; Maradonna and ten other blokes won the 1986 WC (Platini has better players round him than Maradonna did).

I may be looking at the past through rose tinted glasses, but that goal against England - not the hand of God, the other one - I have never seen better and I doubt I ever will. And I have had the privilige of watching Matt Letissier (and Bale

Messi is almost 31 now and has clearly lost a yard of pace.

All great players you’ve mentioned and I’ve seen most of em. But I’m still drawn to Messi in his pomp as the best I’ve ever seen.

I'd agree Maradona is best ever based on what I have seen (i've also seen him in the flesh being destroyed by Bryan Robson but I'll accept that as an anomaly) but that Argie side in 1986 wasn't anywhere near as 'average' as the one Ronaldo inspired to the Euro's.

Burruchaga and Valdano both great players in their own right off the top of my head for a start.

Cruyff is the one for me who always looked like he just knew football and pissed it on the pitch, running things completely. Would have loved to have seen him play.

I always think of Pele as being overrated in that for all his 1000 domestic goals they were all in Brazil and he played in a national team of 11 truly great players. He was brilliant no doubt but not sure on best ever.

That said, never saw him play bar on TV clips so who am I to argue?

It's hard for me to say really because of my age but if I had to pick a greatest ever then it's Diego for me.

They’d never have beaten the guards without him though despite Rocky Balboa’s heroics in goal.

I suppose it follows that any player considered the greatest has to be a forward. They score and make the goals.

I’ll give a nod to Paulo Maldini as one of the greats too.

I was in the Northam that day <ok>
Still buzzing now actually.

Think that might have been his last goal for us?

Pretty sure it was. I was almost bang in line with the corner Dodd scored, still a disgrace that they took that off him.

Missing the lunch time games.

Yeah same. Been enjoying the lunchtime games in my studio at work. That TV I bought was the best 35 quid I’ve spent in ages. Don’t get to see much of the 3pm ko’s as I have to pick my daughter up from school.

All the matches are on in the canteen and communal areas here so it’s decent and can have it on my second screen without anyone being arsed despite a lack of football fans in the office. Plus this is the quietest time of the year for me so it’s all quite chill.
