Ah! that myth again. You have to speculate to accumulate and with the TV money, it encourages more risk. But all clubs suffer. It could be a lot worse. Look at Liverpool for example....

Plenty of duff signings during the reigns of Hodgson and Rodgers but since Klopp arrived, only the goalkeeping situation remains a relative weakness for them.

We can certainly site the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United making woeful signings, but we are Southampton and do not have their financial strength, so cannot afford to "waste" 15m euros or 20m euros on iffy signings. Just my thought.

We do? I wonder how much SFC have wasted in the transfer market since promotion on players who have either failed to perform, or were benched pretty quickly? Boufal? Carillo? Classie? Osvaldo? Ramírez? The Norwegian defender? That is quite a lot of money to have frittered away down the plug-hole without much of a return. Add in the length and cost of salaries, and we can see how fortunate we were that Swansea mangaged to snatch relegation from our grasp.

Our model has basically relied on buying 2-3 players and hoping one of them really works out. We then sell them on relatively quickly to keep the finances secure. Outlay of 20-30m income 25-75m.

Even reinvesting all of those transfer fees in transfer fees, it's tough to sell your best players annually and get better; it's definitely harder still if you aren't reinvesting all of it.

You're being kind. I think its impossible. Not that we can't find players, I personally think there are many players out there but players don't make a team. I was miserable to lose the quality but utterly gutted to lose the teams we've had. The last two years have shown that players who love the club and playing together are worth a lot more. I'm optimistic Hughes will provide some stability. I actually think he cares about the club more than anyone since Nigel and if we get behind him, that will only grow and he will see more success in the medium term.

I think Villa are in the **** primarily because they gambled on promotion and the gamble didn't come off.

Which suggests that we may eventually have been looking at a huge problem had we not managed to stay up.
Been there; done that.
Those years were very hard. Relegation from PL. The play-off defeat to Derby. The financial collapse of SFC & then things started to get a tad better :emoticon-0100-smile

Spot on NZ; couldn't agree more. Could go down the "if we'd only" route but I'll leave that.

I too, for some unknown reason, think MH is a bit more in touch with SFC than people might imagine. I think it was the way he conducted himself at the SMS walkabout. Did his bit but didn't want to milk it. I liked that. Showed a bit of class in my eyes.

With my dodgy Spanish I am guessing that says we have offered €25m for Mateus Uribe, who I have never heard of. Plays in the Mexican league and is a midfielder in Colombia World Cup squad.

The Mexican league is pretty good I think, and they tend to pay well so that is why you don't see too many people move to Europe from it. I have no idea about this guy though, never even heard of him which is pretty unusual for me.

A quick look on wiki says he has 11 goals in 30 games for his current club, very good for a midfielder and as I said, I think the Mexican league is meant to be pretty strong,

For some reason we don't have a good record with South American players. How many South American signings have we made and how many have worked out? The only one that I can think of is Guly.

Pedro Rodrigues won us the cup (I mean he has to be part Mexican with that Zapata tash surely)...
