And if he does an MP1 or Ronald, then he will be prised away for a sack of gold. So what’s our ideal? Scintillating attack minded football style and a finish in 9th? Would do for me.

I just want to get some goals happening again. We need to be banging them in again, if not then sparky won’t last. To do that we need to re invest, no question, you simply cannot be starting Shane long and Redmond game after game so at least two new players up front for me plus sims and hesketh getting a chance to show what they can do. I don’t know why sims hasn’t been getting a go, he gave Liverpool a hard time FFS. We’ve abandoned our youth completely it seems. Maybe waiting for our European feeder team.

Yes I’ve heard MH ran quite a loose ship at Stoke, which certainly was instrumental in his departure. Somewhat surprising but widely reported (in Stoke). Maybe he’d enough of that regime? Not sure what that means for us but I’m 100% behind him.

I think most managers have a shelf life. Sparky probs reached the end of his at Stoke. He isn’t likely to be with saints for 16 years. If he can bring sone discipline organisation and steel back to the side for a season we will do all right. We can reset ourselves and look at sneaking back up the league under the radar, with our tail between our legs, hoping that the big clubs don’t go into a frenzy on us once more.

So many times I was convinced we were down; after West Ham, after Chelsea, after drawing with Everton...

To pick the players up every time, and get them believing again, was a remarkable achievement on Hughes' part imo. I get that people aren't convinced by his tactical nous, approach to the game, previous record in the transfer market etc; but to me all those things are secondary in importance to leadership qualities, and he has those.

Besides, he's no mug. He has played the game at the highest (club) level.
....and he learned from Fergie too !

Nah we'd have still stayed up with MP :) :bandit:

Sorry Qwerty, yes it's the counterfactual but what we achieved with Hughes was by a fine enough margin, that even a manager almost as impactful as him wouldn't have achieved it. That level of impact was well beyond Pellegrino.

Not too many of Fergies disciples have been hugely successful in management. That man was a special breed, almost a one-off.
Good point. One never stops learning, and I think Sparky maybe learned as much from his last season at Stoke, than he did from his successes elsewhere - and we should be the beneficieries of it.

Saints and Mark Hughes is a good match and we know that the players connected with him and his team
So I feel good about this appointment
I have seen tons of ****ty comments on BBC, etc from other fans but I really dont agree with all the pessimism

What I liked about Mark Hughes in the few games we played, he took risks. You are not going to win any games of football without taking risks.

If he can setup us up as attacking team that’s good to watch I will be happy. If we can turn draws from last season in to wins we will be fine.
