Right with people banging on saying we have overpaid for players and we are buying the league I thought we should look at it a different way. While we may have over paid on Matt Mills and if we get Maynard we would of overpaid on him but some of the bargains make up for that Since Sven has signed we have signed Sol Bamba- 250K Darius Vassell- Free Lee Peltier- 750K Neil Danns- Free Kasper Schmeichel- 1M Sean St. Ledger- 1.2M David Nugent- Free Matt Mills- 5.5M Paul Konchesky 1.5M John Pantsil- Free Michael Ball- Free Grand Total- 10.25M Centre halfs- Bamba and Mills come to a total off 5.75M. Had we paid 2.8M for each of them then everyone would say great business by Sven. We have bargains like Danns, Nugent, Schmeichel, Bamba, Vassell which allow us to over pay for some players If we get Maynard for say 7M then Nugent and Maynard would be the front 2. Had we paid 3.5M for each of them and again people would be saying great business. Sometimes you have to over pay for some players. Look at Arsenal now, they are too stubborn and massively suffering because of it. Sven knows what he is doing while some people are saying Wenger doesnt have a clue anymore.
10m for basically a new squad is cheap. I think it boils down to jelousy. Everyone in the league wants the money we have and those that don't have it (or owners that won't spend it) become sour. Take Hull for example. Last year they we're saying how rich their owner was and how they we're going to buy top class players. They have spent about 800k and got players like Jack Hobbs, Dele Adebola and Paul McKenna One of those things.
I dont think we have overspent at all this season! In the prem with the money flying around 10 mill would only get you one decent player, The likes of Leeds and Dull have spent alot more money than what we have spent, it is just a case of sourgrapes by teams that think they are better than what they are, at least we have not signed a player on £45,000 a week and then try to give him away
I'm still not convinced any Championship defender is worth £5.5m, and St Ledger looks expensive for a reserve, but the rest is great business - And any money lost on those two is more than made up for with just £0.25m on Bamba and Kasper - only £1m for a Prem quality keeper! Great business!
Yeh it all depends which way you look at it. £10m is a lot of money to spend in one summer and £5m for Mills looks ridiculous, especially considering his performances so far. But it does even itself out. 11 players for £10m doesn't sound much at all. Weirdly, the cheaper they are the better they've been so far, bar Schmeichel who was still pretty cheap. At this point I can't believe I wanted Westwood more than him, still early days of course.
Leicester = ambitious = last season loan players left = new players in to compete because were lesta = promotion (60-90 mil)
I'd rather have spent the money and got the players than been really frugal and still be needing 3-4 players going into deadline day. The good thing about buying quickly was that we could get them settled into the squad and let them have a pre-season with the team to help them settle. The Arsenal comparison is a good one and I would say, look at both Liverpool and Arsenal right now. Liverpool spent the money quickly and maybe overpaid for a few but got the players they wanted and their number 1 targets are now settled in the squad and starting to gel together and Liverpool have started well because they spent the money required to bring in the players they wanted. Arsenal on the other hand refused to pay what was required and are now in a situation where players they wanted aren't at the club and they go into these last 2 days in the situation I mentioned whereby they need 3-4 players and even if they do get them, they won't have time to gel and settle in with the rest of the squad. Anyway, as I've said before, transfer values are all subjective. If we finish 18th in the league then we'll say we've wasted a shed load of money but if we get promoted we'll say money well spent. But by spending the money required to get the players we wanted, I think we've put ourselves in a good position to be saying the latter.
The other thing is what value would you place on these players now. Sol Bamba- 3m Darius Vassell- 500k Lee Peltier- 1m Neil Danns- 2.5m Kasper Schmeichel- 2m Sean St. Ledger- 1m David Nugent- 3m Matt Mills- 4m Paul Konchesky 1.5m John Pantsil- 1.5m Michael Ball- 500k Grand Total- 20.5m??
id slap a bit more on danns, maybe £4m in this climate, and if we sold kapser for £2m id be pretty annoyed, maybe £3.5m
Anyway, as I've said before, transfer values are all subjective. If we finish 18th in the league then we'll say we've wasted a shed load of money but if we get promoted we'll say money well spent. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What will people say if we finish 3rd and lose in the playoffs? Usually that would be considered a successful season but not this year. But...next year we would have pretty much the same squad I would imagine and no need for a major rebuild. They would know each other from playing together and any additions could be individual players of real quality.
