That says all I need to know of prog rock. To me, great songs don't have a first 5 minutes, let alone a final 5!

I used the word "song" loosely, in truth it is an innovative and sophisticated piece of music by a group of talented and highly proficient Musicians, more akin to a Classical composition than a traditional 3 minute Pop or Rock & Roll song.
I'm very open minded with music, I can find something that can move me emotionally or intellectually in almost any genre, there is great music everywhere!
Without Prog, it is doubtful that we would have the Kate Bush we know and love and with the advent of bands like Radiohead and Muse it is no longer "uncool" to like it, even Johnny Rotten now admits to liking Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull and he was mates with Keith Emerson!.

Well said! Like you I like all sorts and don’t discriminate according to genre. I think it goes back to growing up in the 60’s and 70’s when music wasn’t categorised the way it is today, so you either liked something or you didn’t.

I certainly never liked or disliked a piece of music purely in terms of how long it was, although John Cage’s 4’33” was a challenge!

I either like something or I don't, though I was born in 89. I have no idea what all the seemingly infinite genres and sub genres are or what counts as what, maybe I'm just ignorant, but it just doesn't matter to me. Actually that's a lie, it annoys me all the categorisations, I have no idea if it has a use as I'm not musical in the slightest, but I sometimes hear people having deep conversations about genres and I just don't get it.

Happy 68th Birthday to Prog Rock band Genesis Founder and permanent member, Keyboardist, Guitarist, Vocalist and Songwriter, Tony Banks who was born on this day in East Sussex in 1950...

This is some of his finest work IMO, if you don't know the song wait until the final five minutes, Banks comes into his own then...

Absolutely brilliant - as is “Firth of Fifth” on this album

It's interesting to me personally because i've always been fascinated by the history and evolution of music and it is very rare that you will find an artist that hasn't been influenced by previous ones and it's useful on this thread to describe the type of song. I've never had a long indepth conversation about categories though!

I get what you and Chilco are saying. It's just that I've always been a singles fan far more than albums hence the tendency to 2-4 minute songs.

I like glam, punk/new wave, 2-Tone and some folk-rock but can't recall any songs I own being significantly over 5 mins long. Some of Wire's stuff is really short e.g this 79-second treat:

Here’s 11 minutes of pure folk-rock perfection. Just listen to the way this builds, it just wouldn’t work if they’d made it any shorter!

There is an 80s American Hardcore Punk band actually called Minutemen, because their songs generally last about that long!...
