Doctors follow trends in diagnosis, depending which drug the pharmaceutical companies are pushing.

That isn't the point. There are probably a higher percentage of asthma sufferers because diagnos is better.
However the odd thing is how many supposed asthmatics make the grade in athletics, swimming and cycling compared to previously. And how many of them have asthmatic events requiring medications which can give an advantage just before events. And, despite every minute detail of their performance figures being recorded end up with medical records going astray or not treatment not recorded.

Don’t doubt it whatsoever.

Theres still no way in a million years 33% of our top cyclists have reached that level despite the obvious disadvantage of having asthma. There might conceivably be - and I’m being generous - 3% who have it. So the other 30% are plain cheating.

Sounds like we’ve put this one to bed. Well done all. What next - the Palestine question?

These figures come from a world expert on asthma in sport who tested the athletes.

They have to be taken as independent and trusted.

Asthma isn't black and white. There are different forms of asthma with differing severity.

I don’t like all this witch-huntery. I’m entirely sure that - because he’s British and not one of those dirty, cheating foreigners - the special asthma medicine that Old **** Hair had specially couriered was entirely legitimate and in no way could he possibly acquire said medicine locally. After all, he was in Foreignland at the time and we all know what their substances are like. Well done to him on not taking any risks.

As an aside, isn’t it weird how asthma always suddenly flares up in the weeks immediately before a race?

The excitement leaves them breathless...

there's probably a higher percentage because kids have been wrapped in cotton wool by fearful, over-attentive and, yes, fad-following parenting and not allowed to acquire natural immunities that kids used to acquire.

Nothing to do with ever-increasing air pollution then?

I’ve just injected myself for the first time, about ten minutes ago.

Fragmin.

I’m getting more like Wiggers by the day.

That is contributed to by the school run?

Aha, cracked the conundrum. Kids go by car instead of cycling to school. Only in later life, when diagnosed with asthma do they embark on an Olympian career. There you go, all sorted.

Blaming the school run, etc is a cheap hit. There is l
Is air pollution increasing? More and more stringent emission regulations on motor vehicles over the past 20 years and air quality is worse?
Apparently it is, in urban areas. Increasing numbers of diesel vehicles cited as a major contributor. I just raised it because someone earlier suggested kids were getting asthmatic because of not being allowed to play out and by being driven to school. I thought that was a bit of a cheap shot.

Now that diesel is the fuel of Satan i thought sales of diesel cars was going down and the ones that are being sold are cleaner than ever due to Ad Blue, EGR, SCR, DPF and the like.

Some good articles by Paul Kimmage about this and froome. Can't see Walsh though, he writes for the times and you have to subscribe.

I'm not an expert I've just picked up the odd thing here and there but DEFRA and WHO have both claimed air pollution is on the increase particularly in urban areas. I think they're also measuring more and different pollutants these days and realising that more things are bad for us, asthmatically speaking (!).

Have people actually read the research on why Athletes and cyclists are more likely to suffer from asthma? Or are you making accusations without actually reading the evidence and numerous papers on this matter? A lot of people could do with reading up on certain subjects before having opinions on certain matters and make accusations they actually no very little about.

Similarly, are people finding Bradley Wiggins (And Froome) guilty before knowing the full story?

We are such a judgemental country without knowing the full facts, has the principle of innocent until proven guilty disappeared?

Why are they more likely to be asthmatics than they were years ago though?

Isn't my area of expertise.... My area of knowledge is about why athletes/cyclists are far more susceptible to asthma than non athletes/cyclists. I have no doubt it will match the rise in asthma diagnosis in everyone, therefore the rise is probably in line with society as a whole.

As I say I am not fully certain so I won't be putting forward ridiculous views and shoving my opinion on people and saying people are guilty without evidence. Not claiming that is you, but this thread as a whole!
