I don't want to tell them about the story of us winning the cup, followed by the team going into a prolonged and painful tailspin from which it doesn't recover from many years. That's my fear. I don't trust our management in good times, and certainly not in bad.

Now, the reverse is also true...it's entirely possible that we stay up this year while failing to win the cup (indeed, as we're massive underdogs to win the cup, this is the most likely scenario), faff about in the summer, then get relegated next season and begin a serious decline. Hypotheticals are hypotheticals, though.

You don’t want to tell him about winning the FA Cup? Surely that would override whatever came next?

Exactly, hypotheticals are hypotheticals and you never know what's around the corner.

So why not take the cup win while it's on offer? ;)

Aside from being bought by someone on the same scale as City or PSG.
We’d be amazing but it would be bought and not earned.
I despise City more than Liverpool. They have simply bought their way to sucess. Yes they play great, but when you can bend the rules to keep all the other teams in check to get the best players then you are going to.

Yeah that's the only way we'd become a real force in this league and I don't think I'd even want that.

Have to agree. I would love to see what it would be like to be a huge force in World football for a season or two.

Until that day comes however I’d much rather have a cup than survival this season.

We’d return to the Prem eventually. So has to be a cup for me.

I don't know why people are dismissing the prospect of winning the PL. Afterall, we're talking completely hypothetically.

If you offered me FA Cup and relegation this season, over no FA Cup and survival this season followed by winning the PL next season, I'd be choosing the latter.

Do I think we're likely to win the PL anytime soon? No, of course I don't. But this is a completely hypothetical discussion, so it shouldn't be dismissed. And in any event, a surprise side has won the PL more recently than one has won the FA Cup. (I agree that it's a very rare event, but equally just go and have a look at the FA Cup winners since Wimbledon won it 30 years ago!)

Where’s the “get dicked in the quarter final of the cup and get relegated” option as that is what is probably going to happen this year

Because it will never, never happen. Leicester was a one off which hasn't happened in the money era before and will likely never happen again.

Wigan and Pompey have both won the FA Cup in the past decade.

I massively, massively doubt it will ever happen again. But I also can't see us winning the FA Cup.

This whole discussion is somewhat fantasy land (which I'm not having a dig at, btw). So to have such a discussion, I don't see why it should then be limited.

Yes I massively doubt Leicester will ever be repeated. But they never saw it coming. Likewise I doubt Man City ever saw it coming, before they got taken over. (Completely different circumstances, but there's more than one route to the top).

The FA Cup is not the League Cup. It isn't easy to win. Yes Wigan and Pompey have done it in the past decade, but as I say, go right back 30 years. It's those two, and Everton in the mid 90s. That is it, in 30 years. Outside of those three occassions, it's just the big boys winning it. That's one whole more occasion than a non-big boy winning the PL (Leicester and Blackburn).

I'd say it's massively more likely to win that than the league though, it's a cup competition, anything can happen. A lot of other clubs have made finals and been unlucky to lose as well, West Ham and Palace off the top of my head. Even Pompey in 2010.

I also wouldn't class Blackburn as in the same category as Leicester. They spent a lot for the time.

Just look at the PL table this season...SIXTEEN points between 5th and 7th place, the gap is widening and the transfer fees and wages are widening too.
It's a microcosm of capitialism and it's difficult to see where it is going to end up, probably with the elite in a separate league.

To win the FA Cup you need to win six ties of random fixtures, probably at least one match against an elite club (more likely two or three).

Well we've won 3 ties... and got our first elite club coming up.

Last South Coast team to win a pot had to win a quarter final in Manchester against the team comfortably the best in the league and among the best in Europe...

No, because I think that it would render it a very bittersweet victory. The cup win would be our last hurrah before the bottom fell out, and the source of a neverending series of questions concerning whether we would have survived if we hadn't had a two-track mind that year. It would forever be "we won, but...".

Or we could bounce back up like Burnley or Newcastle....
