should we ban those pesky pensioners from voting

Ban the spoilt elderly from voting says Jeremy Paxman (a cantankerous 67) who also accuses pensioners of ‘exploiting’ their vote by forcing politicians to focus on their own problems

    • Paxman accused OAPs of betraying young people and holding MPs to ransom
    • Blame his generation for the housing crisis, saying young people now struggle
    • His salary was £240,000 for University Challenge and £800,000 for Newsnight

There years after he quit Newsnight, it would appear Jeremy Paxman has lost little of his combative style.
But instead of taking on politicians in the TV studio, he’s decided to rail at an entire generation – pensioners.
The 67-year-old presenter accused his peers of betraying young people and holding politicians to ransom – and called for a ban on votes for the over-65s.
He added: ‘I think that my generation have behaved like spoilt children. And, like spoilt children, our response is “it’s not my fault”. It’s never our bloody fault.
‘Actually, it is, because we have failed to recognise the consequences of our behaviour.’
He said he did not take his state pension and he lamented the money given to the elderly, including the winter fuel allowance. ‘I don’t take the fuel allowance and I was offended to be offered it frankly – while I appreciate that some people do need it,’ he said.
‘And I don’t take the pension. They’ve still got to be paid for by other people.’
He admitted he was ‘very fortunate’ and was able to keep working. ‘I’d like to carry on annoying people for a bit longer,’ he said.

The presenter, who hosted Newsnight for 25 years before stepping down in 2014, said his generation had enjoyed free university education and a booming jobs market. He claimed none of his friends had found it difficult to get work.
He went on to blame his generation for the housing crisis, saying they had enjoyed cheap property, while the young struggled to get on the housing ladder.
‘In that period between getting a job and demanding our pensions, we have sat on our arses and watched our houses appreciate in value to the point where property prices bear no relation to people’s earnings,’ he said.

In 2006, it was revealed that Paxman's annual salary was £240,000 for University Challenge and £800,000 for Newsnight
The Cambridge graduate also accused pensioners of ‘exploiting’ their vote by forcing politicians to focus on their own problems. He was speaking at an event run by debating organisation Intelligence Squared.
‘Betrayal is a harsh word … and refusing to recognise the consequences of your own actions is in itself an act of betrayal,’ he said.
Those consequences, according to Paxman, are a highly competitive job market, limited prospects and sky-high property prices.
He said older people had too much power over political debate. He added: ‘I’m in favour of limiting the franchise … by stopping people voting at 65.
'The problem is that we demand things of politicians and they give it to us because they know we’ll go out and vote.
‘They keep making them [pensioners] promises – and in particular, they promised that they will improve their pensions.’
Since stepping down from Newsnight, it is not clear how much Paxman now earns.
But in 2006, it was revealed his annual salary was £240,000 for University Challenge and £800,000 for Newsnight.
Last year, it emerged that he had split with his wife of 34 years, TV producer Elizabeth Clough, and he was seen in the company of Canadian researcher Jillian Taylor, 38. He has three grown-up children.

He seemed to have done a trade in
    Good luck to him
    Always liked his TV presence
Compare say his style to that of the ice bison Claire Balding... to hear her say the words RAD and STOKED must come close to a sin before God

Paxman maybe last of the greats imo

I’ve been away for a few days having a lovely time with good company in Europe. Such a nice time that I haven’t kept up with what has been going on in the world. Or on here much.

The a lot of the stuff on the last few pages on this thread is most unwelcoming, down with that kind of thing.

    Careful now.

This thread needs to be closed for a bit.

Emotions seem to be running high amongst the Rangers brotherhood at the moment and quite frankly this forum isn't about dividing the support. This is after all a football forum and it's hard enough in our present predicament as it is. Whilst these type of threads are allowed to run they do so in the spirit that's intended. Although we allow them to a fair degree of self moderation I feel that this thread has crossed the line and is in need of some respite. There are too many accusations aimed personally towards our fellow posters and this needs to be addressed. Political threads aren't a given, they're a privilege on here. If you're unhappy with this decision there are plenty of places you can go to post your political opinions elsewhere on the internet and indeed on the Not606 forum.

    Closed until further notice.

    Nines.

    Thread re opened.
As we stated from the start, this thread is self moderating. Political discussion on this forum can only exist if everyone respects each others views. The personal attacks bullying and name calling that took place over the weekend cannot be tolerated and if they persist ..we will have no option but to close the thread permenantly.

When a Blyth Valley constituent emailed his MP Ronnie Campbell to remind him that Labour isn’t doing very well in Northumberland, Ronnie asked his secretary to reply:

Well said. Why do you think it is always tolerated by enough politicians for any laws to be passed to deal with it. They can't all be on the payroll of the NRA surely?

    The ones that count are.
This is the time a referendum would count, the vast amount of people would put an end to this insanity.

You sound as though you believe it would be an overwhelming majority. Even more than 52-48. (Note to the Mods: That was a joke and not intended to be incendiary.) Referendums? In the mother of all democracy? Bet that's not going to happen any time soon. After all what would the point then be of having billions to bribe the movers and shakers with in order to persuade them to your point of view or at least not oppose it.
