So you're guessing based on someone's tweet rather than seeing the incident yourself?

FFS, that's why some of us are fed up discussing this with people who are so set in their luddite ways without a shred of compelling argument on their side.
Haha
If you’re fed up discussing it with me, and the othe Luddites, then why are you continuing ?

All we’re doing on here is sharing opinions. We don’t get to actually vote on whether VAR continues or not, which I’m sure it will, we’re just chewing the fat so there’s no need at all to get excited about whether your argument is compelling (I haven’t seen a compelling argument for it from you or anyone though so don’t take that personally)

My point in relating that tweet was merely to say that so early in its use someone who certainly does know a bit about the game already thinks a call was wrong. Whether or not I agree with him on whether it should or shouldn’t have been a penalty isn’t the point at all.

You realise of course that the complaint was that VAR wasn't used when it should have been..? That's kind of counterintuitive if you're arguing it has no place in the game.

I do realise that yes. The wrong call was presumably not using it (could it have been used though? I assumed so but Walter above suggests not)

It could if the ref had checked with VAR instead of issuing a yellow for a dive I believe (it's different in Aus to England). The fact he issues a yellow for the dive is the equivalent of issuing a yellow for a red-card tackle. It can't then be reviewed and changed (again, I believe. Different in Aus)

I see
Strange rule though because some of the close calls naturally fall in the ‘Penalty v Booking someone for diving’ category

Personally I’d resolve that by not having VAR as an option ;)

I think incidents like last night will help in the long run, the VAR is very much in its infancy, last night it worked once and failed once, now it's time to review how and when it's used so in the future those marginal calls are correct.

Without the VAR there would have been two wrong calls last night, so it's an improvement. It's by no means perfect but it's a step in the right direction.

I may have missed something , why don't they use the same system that rugby league use. Seems to work well.

Depressing to think the most exciting moments will be looking at the screen and holding cards up with Goal! on when it is confirmed it is one.

The rugby one is only used for the games live on TV. In football it would be for every game. In the PL at least. Lower down the leagues cost would be an issue. Even at the best run club in the Football League.

Not only will the exciting bit be settling down to stare at the screen waiting for a decision, but it will also be the lucrative bit too

Naturally a referees decision is important to people, but it’s also a good way of generating extra sponsorship

The fact it’s the “Commercial Officer” confirming it’s use tells us all we need to know about what inspired the decision.
