He did give them an unfair advantage undoubtedly. Just glad it didn't change anything. At least we won't ever see him back here again. Interested in the thoughts of @tomw24
We moan about our next matches....Bournemouth's next 5 are Palace, United, Liverpool, Chelsea and City.
Why is it wrong for a ref to have a game plan? Referees don't come from Mars they know full well a Merseyside derby or Manchester derby is going to be more feisty than West Brom v Stoke. You can't approach every game with the same attitude. I get where Clattenburg is coming from. I don't agree with him coming out and saying it and I certainly don't agree with him "alllowing Spurs to blow the league".
I understand what you mean but the laws of the games aren't guidelines, they are rules that he should follow as a ref. As I say imagine if it had gone the other way ie impacted on the result? This is just him self promoting and stroking his ego. So glad we'll never see the prick ref here again.
Having a different approach to a game you know is going to be feisty is one thing, but surely you can’t make your mind up in advance you aren’t going to send any players off, just to save yourself from criticism afterwards? That’s putting your own ego above the good of the game, something Clattenburg was often guilty of.
Tom you have admitted something you have always adamantly argued against. Referees should apply the laws of the game consistently. What you’ve just admitted is that the approach changes depending on who is playing. This means a player doing an identical tackle in a non high profile game may get booked where as in a big game they’d get a warning. This is inconsistency at its best/worst. Everything that is wrong with refereeing. I think you have to approach every game with the same attitude otherwise All the teams don’t have a level playing field.
I'm going to listen to the actual podcast soon so back in a bit to tell you how great Clatts is what I think.
I want to make it clear. I'm not justifying what Clattenburg did - I was just disputing TLL's claim that referee's having a gameplan is wrong. And I'm referring to gameplan as a way of managing the game as a referee, not in the application of the laws. I obviously didn't make that clear.
Guardiola warned about his responsibilities but faces no further action for his interaction with Redmond. Can't say I wanted any further action against him....wouldn't help us, but still think his actions were odd and a bit insulting to Mauricio. It isn't his place to advise another team's player.
Fair enough Tom. At a professional level, shouldn’t all game plans be the same? I understand the difference between game plans if you’re reffing U10s v U18s, but not so for he pro game.
Nah, no need for that. They could always meet somewhere inconspicuous. Say maybe Blackpool Pleasure beach...
Wye aye man. The boy Clatts, he is not a shy modest type. I think Oliver Kay is right here, this story doesn't make any sense. Other than that, I mainly thought it was a load of cliche that I don't really want to analyze for deep meaning.
Clattenburg said he could have given 2-3 red cards but he didn't want to influence the game. Not sending a player off if he deserved it does influence the game surely.....it means everyone is given a licence to foul.
The interview itself was just played on 5 live - you really need to hear the way he says it. It’s much worse than it reads on paper. Dermot Gallagher came on and was pretty appalled and said it was pathetic and completely wrong (though did also comment that he was an exceptional ref).
Nice to see us getting so involved in the EPL Player of the Month. Most of the nominees scored against us
New TV stuff from 2019. Some Saturday 7.45pm games, and every match in the midweek/bank holiday fixtures will be live, I guess like Soccer Saturday with actual live highlights. Most write ups think Amazon/Netflix/Youtube etc won't go for these, but maybe next time around. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42278119
