Ashes 2017-18: Joe Root 'ready' to be targeted by Australia By Stephan Shemilt BBC Sport in Townsville, Australia 4 hours ago From the sectionCricket 68 Sharethis page please log in to view this image Joe Root has made scores of 9, 58 and 1 in England's two tour games so far England captain Joe Root says he is ready to be targeted by Australia in the Ashes series. Australia spinner Nathan Lyon said last week that all of the home bowlers will be focusing on Root. "I've heard a lot of chat about targeting me, in particular," Root, 26, told BBC Sport. "We'll be targeting every single one of them - we won't be singling anyone out. Bring it on - it's what it's all about." Australians talking about singling out England's captain or best batsman is a regular feature in the build-up to an Ashes series - legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath made a habit of it during the 1990s and 2000s. As well as Lyon's comments, Australia opener David Warner has described the series as "war". Root said: "There's been a lot of talk. Some of it is exciting and some of it is a load of rubbish, especially from some of the Aussie players. "I try not to do too much talking. That's more for them to worry about. The more you say, the more it can backfire on you. We will go about things our way. Hopefully that's the right way." Root's side begin their final warm-up match, a four-day game against a Cricket Australia XI, on Wednesday in Townsville. The estate agent in charge of England - the real Trevor Bayliss Australians like to talk a lot - Moeen Ashes squad, schedule and tour results Overton given chance to impress again In naming the team for that game, Root all but confirmed James Vince will bat at number three for the first Test in Brisbane, with Gary Ballance again missing out. Pace bowler Jake Ball is unavailable with an ankle injury but is expected to be fit for the Test at the Gabba. In his absence, uncapped Craig Overton has another opportunity to stake his claim for what looks to be the only available place in the Test side. "The selection for this game gives us a good indication of where we're at," said Root. "Craig has done really well, but all of the bowlers have done themselves proud." While most of England's top order have spent decent time at the crease during the first two warm-up matches, no-one has made a century. Cricketers dice with danger down under "The one thing that we have not got quite right yet is converting 60s and 70s into big hundreds," said Root. "It's nice to see guys getting in and building an innings in these conditions, but we know what will win Test matches is big hundreds." In three innings on tour, opener Alastair Cook, England's all-time leading Test runscorer, has managed only 47 runs. "With his experience and his weight of runs, the amount of cricket he's played, he'll know how he needs to get ready. "It would be nice for him to get a bucketload this week but, if not, I'm fully confident the quality he has and the things he has done previously will set him up nicely for the first Test." James Anderson, England's highest Test wicket-taker, in unavailable in Townsville because of illness, but is expected to be fully fit for the first Test. England team to play Cricket Australia XI: Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root (c), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton, Stuart Broad, Mason Crane.
Ashes 2017-18: Moeen Ali says Australians like to talk a lot and England must stay 'calm' By Stephan Shemilt BBC Sport in Townsville, Australia From the sectionCricket Sharethis page Cricketers dice with danger down under Australians "like to talk a lot" and England need to stay "calm" during the Ashes, says the tourists' all-rounder Moeen Ali. Moeen, 30, has recovered from a side strain and will play in England's final warm-up game, starting on Wednesday. The first Test at the Gabba begins on 23 November, with England looking to defend the urn they regained in 2015. Moeen told BBC Sport: "It's about being ready for that first ball when it's delivered in Brisbane." The Worcestershire player, on his first Ashes tour down under, says he is ready for the intensity of the series and any hostility from the Australia players. "Australians like to talk a lot, big themselves up," he said. "That's part of the game. It's not something that I haven't had before." Sledged by the pilot - perils of an Ashes tour A pink wedding jacket and scented candles - who is the real Trevor Bayliss? Ashes schedule and tour results Alastair Cook and Moeen Ali feed a crocodile on the tour of Australia In order to begin the series with a victory, England would have to end Australia's unbeaten run in Brisbane that dates back to 1988. The home side's success in Queensland, coupled with a crowd that is often raucous and partisan, has led to the ground being nicknamed 'the Gabbatoir'. "I've heard a lot about Brisbane," said Moeen. "It's something you have to block out. You have to focus on your game and the situation that the team is in. "I'm prepared the best I can. When you're out there you rely on your instincts. I know it will be tough, but I've always backed my ability." England completed a 192-run win over a Cricket Australia XI in Adelaide on Saturday, and face the same side again in Townsville. The four-day game will be Moeen's first action of the tour, but he said there are benefits to sitting out the previous two warm-up matches. "I've had more time to work on my game," he said. "Sometimes when you're playing you don't get the chance to focus on yourself. "Another benefit of not playing those two games is that it makes you hungrier to get out there and be with the guys. I can't wait to put my whites on and start performing." Moeen, usually England's number eight in Test cricket, is likely to move up the order in the absence of Ben Stokes, who remains in England after being arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm. Stokes is awaiting the outcome of a police investigation into his involvement in a fight outside a Bristol nightclub on 25 September. "With the Stokesy situation I've probably got to go up the order by one, but my aim as a cricketer is to get up the order as high as I can, maybe push into a role at five or six," said Moeen. "Obviously that's a bit further ahead. Firstly I have to do the job at number seven."
I don't know but its watford saying get lost according to what i just read. Which imo is quite reasonable for watford to state. The longer this goes the worse it looks for a) unsworth. how can players look at him and tough calls he makes like mirallas etc and get on board? b) everton for sacking one guy and having no idea whats next c) for anyone who takes the job as clearly they will be 5th or 6th choice.
A long way from the 'vision' Moshiri purportedly had. Feel for the fans who must be wondering what's going on. Poaching another manager isn't the right way to go about it either, else they could end up with another who remains distant from what the club's all about.
In fairness there's not many available bar the usual suspects so all clubs want this in May not in November as it messes them up and gives thrm the issue and 10mil compensation is nothing compared to falling apart yourself potentially.
So, stating the obvious, stick with Unsworth for the rest of the season. Having no plan in place before sacking Koeman was madness. It's the sort of petulance you expect from Chelsea, difference being they have managers tripping over themselves to go there. Realistically, without throwing £23m at it ..... what ..... which will get you a mercenary, who would be a good fit for that club?
I think they need steve walsh to go pick a striker and but that money on the table and save thier season. 40mil if thats what it takes to get one. After that... unsworth? if he had a striker and 11 guys willing to run through a wall for the srit i'm sure they'd be fine. I dpn't know who is a good fit for everton. Silva is not a bad shout as an up and coming kind of guy but southampton have had the same. they were not satisfied with Puel for whatever reasons and appointed pelligrini and they are saying he's useless too. I'd almost say they want an experienced man now not an up and comer... though i think many clubs are chasing a pochetino type dream.
Pillow is under pressure at WBA. Might be tempted to move to Everton to help keep them up and preserve his ‘never been relegated’ record.
Tbf fan pressure as well as bad results/league standing is to blame for Koeman's mid season sacking, just as it was a major part of Hodgson getting the sack mid season with us, the difference was had a ready made replacement in Kenny who had been a successful manager prior to his appointment. While it's obviously an honour for Unsworth to take over at his former club he hasn't got experience, but good luck to the lad(excluding derby games of course), he'll need loads of it to be given the job permanently.
Howe is a boyhood blue so - no disrespect intended - would fit their 'homely' philosophy [sorry can't think of another suitable word]. He would have passion for the job and the place he's doing it in. Moshiri may have the money but he doesn't have the blue bug so with him it will hire/fire, hire/fire, hire/fire imo like he still thinks he's at Arsenal with trophy winning ways and all that. Everton is a different animal.. He may have big dreams of ownership of a PL side and Everton welcomed him and his money with open arms but I don't think he's the right fit. His money is but he himself is trying to run before he can walk. Get the basics in place first before you're reaching for Simeone.
Impatience is the name of the game. There's so much money at stake these days, clubs know they can't afford to be too far behind their perceived goals or stages they should be at along the way or they face major problems getting back in the race. I agree with you on Unsworth
My view is LFC have had so many issues that I really don't know where organisationally we are. Parry and Moores Cheapskates and amateur hour. Not committed to the cost in the 1990s, no model to globalise or exploit premier league. put us in debt. G&H money men on the cheap. if 2008 never happened they would be milking us still. Purslow. ego trip Comolli. thought he knew more than he did. ****ed up suarez. bought strange players based on stats. Ayre, Gordon, Hunter, Edwards Everton have Steve walsh out of leicester, Bill kenwright and Moshiri. I don't know if they are any worse than our lot All I can say is we backed every manager to buy mid value players and lots of them. We made do for longer than we needed to on Souness (at least 12 months) Evans and maybe houllier. Appointing rafa after houllier worked for a while then they handed everything to him and he got lost in a mire of detail and G&H bankruptcy. We gave rogers a big chance then blew that by buying the worst of the players he wanted and giving him a choice of balotelli or nowt. then we broke him by sakcing all his staff and holding him til klopp was available. Right now I don't tink LFC are any better than everton. the only think i know is gerrard is next LFC manager. IT IS going to happen. Its just when. I hope klopp is backed but for me the structures at LFC are weak or worse incompetent ust like everton are showing.. I think we waited for Klopp and let rogers swing. I think klopp is a great guy but we need to now build a team properly. I think its almost there but could go tits up very easily in the next 12 months. Everton's issue is they have no more money than half the prem but seem to talk a big game. they remind me of west ham TBH. And we know what west ham owners have done. I thank god FSG have made do with anfield having seen what west ham did to fans in that new bowl of blandness. I hope FSG build the anfield road end but expect them not to. If we did it I'd be delighted. The fans hae been moved about at anfield but not hugely. everton fans want to watch their new stadium and not have the same issues too. breaking up the main home fans section and parcelling it out almost at random has really hurt west ham.
I think Everton's main problem atm is they are overreaching. Moshiri tried to get some big names, players, dof, and now managers but failed and yes everybody does, not just Everton. The fans however really thought there was a chance these people would sign. Moshiri brought an optimism that he simply hasn't delivered on.
I think their approach started well enough. Moshiri bought in they appoint koeman. he has no say or discussions with walsh they appoint Walsh right after too late probably to influence anything in window. also no say in koeman coming. thats 2016. they signed gueye, williams, morgan the snide and bolaise and then of course lookman for future. this all looked to be koemans wants i suppose. they sell stones to fund it but spend 20 or 25 mil before any agnets etc. They go from 11th to 7th.. does this create expectations? I don't know In 2017 they go mad on money. Its lukaku money but still. its very like LFC when suarez went AND i think there might be some of the same different guys buying their own favorites Nathangelo Markelo Volendam Undisclosed Davy Klaassen Ajax £23,600,000 Henry Onyekuru Eupen £6,800,000 Jordan Pickford Sunderland £25,000,000 Michael Keane Burnley £25,000,000 Sandro Ramírez Malaga CF £5,200,000 Boris Mathis Metz Free Josh Bowler Queens Park Rangers £1,500,000 Wayne Rooney Manchester United Free Cuco Martina Southampton Free Lewis Gibson Newcastle United Undisclosed Gylfi Sigurðsson Swansea City £40,000,000 They signed a LOT, but who signed who. who wanted who? I don't know. Then the rumours of koeman and walsh falling out or not liking things Was this over reaching? I don't think in playing staff terms it was not. Only rooney seems a "emotional" buy. The mistake is no striker as i think everyone accepts. NOW the issue is where are they now in head space? I'm sure they never intended to be so badly off by October and sacked koeman but i really don't know whats true now. which managers? I just don't know.
Cambridge English Dictionary: what is overreach: to fail by trying to achieve, spend, or do more than you can manage. I'd say that describes their situation perfectly. Trying to do too much too soon. The Chelsea's and utd's of this world can buy their way out of trouble and do it very quickly. Moshiri thought he could do the same but he's starting from a totally different base level.
Wasn't the point of sacking Koeman just before the international break so you could use the time to hire a replacement? #thatwentwell
The international break is still on, check twitter I`m sure someone will have mentioned one of tonight`s matches
