I don't recall that BIDMAS being quoted when I was at school but it was a thousand years ago.

I'm pretty sure my teachers would have insisted on brackets within an equation like that.

BIDMAS stands for Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. All of these terms are fairly obvious except for 'Indices', which are just powers (eg 23 or 42 etc.) So the order you should do your calculations in is: Brackets. Indices. Division. Multiplication. Addition. Subtraction.
Follow these rules of maths and you will understand why the answer was correct.
