I like that, a glass of sunshine. I did notice it was half empty, or is it half full?

Aargh! Just found out I can't return to Bali in December. We're on the last few days of our current visit. Mrs Jab will go for her brother's wedding, I'll be on a Shell refinery in Holland giving engineering support for a unit shutdown. Grey days indeed! May get over for a game during that time. Just a weekend flying visit.

I see tickets for the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year are on sale at 45 pound a pop. Made Me wonder if anyone on this site would be prepared to waste that sort of money on what in My opinion is essentially a mini version of the Oscars for sport. Not sure I would go even if the tickets were free.

Not me for sure, can't stand award shows at the best of times but Sports Personality of the year always seemed like a pointless one anyway, as personality has little to do with sporting prowess so the award is either for the best sporting achievement ( which it rarely is) or it's for the sportsperson who people like the most, and what does that actually matter. Always been a bit mystified by the whole circus.

It's an entertainment show where we get to review the past year's sporting achievements. The winner is the most popular person and team....may be deserved for sporting reasons or because of how much a person is loved (hence personality in the title....rather than best sportsman/woman). How popular the sport is can also be a factor. It's fine when viewed in that context. I don't watch it so much now, but used to love it for all the sports clips...especially good in an Olympics year. No winner has had me calling foul....I usually can see why they won.

I enjoy the review of the sport and it is also nice when they reflect on and remember those we've lost.

I don't care for the result but enjoy the review. I loved the Bobby Robson tribute a few years back. A special man.

SPOTY also let's us see achievements in rarely reported sports....am often amazed by how many World Champions we have in total. Also for those with the memories of ******ed goldfish, it reminds us of what has happened in the last 12 months.

Fair enough. But the BBC could just as easily make a program to air in December reflecting on the past years sporting achievements including tributes to any sports people that passed away without all the back slapping and having to pay the over paid presenters any more money.

Maybe, but I'm not sure it's a big problem. We could spend all day every day finding things that could be done differently. I don't see it as a major problem.

Soon we'll have to stop everything in case the cost of doing it causes offence. Too many things to worry about in this world than to question a bit of back slapping.

I'm with Fats on this, we all need an excuse for a celebration and it does us no harm at all to see our sporting greats wheeled out for a bash once a year. Despite our country's size, we punch above our weight in world sport and it's good to be reminded that we're better at cricket than the USA, and better at both rugby codes than India.
