Quite. The initial obituary on the website had concerned me that Les's death was just going to pass the club by to an extent, but - while this sort of thing is what most well-run clubs as a matter of course - it's good to see City doing this, and I'm sure the gesture will be very much appreciated by Les's family. Fair play to them.

I know we have the ex Tigers, but it would be nice if the club could aspire to the sort of thing Everton do, where they act to assist former players with health issues by having fund-raising events, 'meet the fans' evenings etc.

The Geordie Beatle.

Must admit as my memory dims of City games, facts, details, there are certain things that never fade.

4-4 Boxing Day v sheffield weds, Waggy v Banks, the Watney Cup Final, N Ireland v Spain, Ashbee at Yeovil, loads of things like that.

But when I heard about 'Sir Les' the other day, I vaguely remembered the goal that he scored when he danced along the South Stand goal line, was probably sheffield united. I probably went to Scunny and 'that' goal (did Les score? so they say)

But the one image that I remembered most, burnt deeply into my memory, is that head and shoulders photo of him on Amber Nectar. Smouldering, mean, cool as in Clint Eastwood cool, almost George Best like.

He was quality was Sir Les, sheer quality.

I seem to think that was the number quoted at the time in the HDM? But it wouldn't surprise me if they under-cooked it. It was a standard thing for them to do back then and well into the Eighties (the League Cup tie at Man Utd in the mid-80s being another prime example). It used to rile me up all the time.
Perhaps I should have used the words "A reported two thousand..."?

I remember they put on a train for Sperz and then announced it was £20.

"I aren't paying that"

I remember him diving in for a headed goal at the near post in some game. There was a lot of buzz around him at the time and I remember hearing someone talking in the stands like they hadn't been there for years, but they'd turned up to see him. An early instance for me of what you'd call 'plastics' now I guess.
