Now Holland can't qualify for the World Cup I wonder if VVD will not be playing for much longer? The main argument I saw for him coming back was that it's a World Cup year

As a 26 year old with huge potential left to realise, the guy can't really afford to go for a whole year without a match. It's a short career, as he said in his statement.

Adam Blackmore out it perfectly on twitter. What Virgil needs to do now is work hard and show the saints fans and the footballing world what a great player he is.

His choice is to stick to his guns and sulk and spend the whole season moaning to the press and being fined and outcast....or rejoin training and see how it goes from there. Depends if he thinks being obnoxious will get him a move in January....remember Virge, if that is what your agent tells you, he's also the one who told you he could get you to Liverpool this summer.

Tbf I haven't actually seen anywhere that he has refused to play (though that may be the case). All I have seen is that he said he wanted to leave and MP said that he should train alone as his head wasn't right, so now the move hasn't happened I do expect him to rejoin the team and start playing in the first team

I guess if he refuses to play for the Saints.........The next thing that will happen is he will not get paid until he does..........He was moaning about a short career....that will make it even shorter!!

I'm glad we held our stance all Summer, It hopefully means that the media might actually listen and believe the board of SFC. I am still surprised he is still here in all honesty.

Now, If VvD apologises to his teammates, & Fans.. I will support him should he put on the shirt, I will not boo.. No point in biting off our nose to spite our face.

I think there's more to it than that. Someone should tell van Dijk to consider what happened to Berahino. Linked with Spurs, bids rejected by West Brom, refuses to play for the club again, returns to some extent but not really focussed... and ends up at Stoke. If he wants his big move he needs to get on with it and perform to a level that convinces a club to make us an offer we can't refuse.

First he needs to convince the manager that he has to be in the team.

Nobody has mentioned our new owners in all of this business. Remember Les does not act autonomously. I think we will find our new owners quite refreshing. Firstly because face is all important to the Chinese so they would not have been prepared to lose face over the VVD affair and secondly because of the reported inscrutability of the Chinese. Other clubs will not be able to anticipate how we might respond when they come knocking. That was Liverpool's mistake in that they thought we would just roll over. As of today I feel there is a new respect for our club. To our reputation as a well managed club we have added "and not to be messed with".

I'm a little surprised, and pleased, that they backed Les and the previous owner's stance. It bodes well. Certainly 'pool fans were overjoyed at the takeover seeing it as certain the new owners would recoup some of their outlay by flogging VVD.

Now they're in jilted john mode. Didn't really want him, will get him for peanuts next Jan, Saints will regret their foolishness by not selling etc etc . . .

Whilst I applaud our stance, I'd have applauded it even more if it had been some other club making it! To play VVW now sends out all sorts of messages to Yoshida, Stephens and our new signings. It just wouldn't seem 'fair' even if he is our best player. My solution; stick him on the bench and put him up front if our forwards aren't scoring. I'm now thinking that, having proved our point, he'll be off in January. I hope so anyway. As it is its LOSE/LOSE for us and VVD. Other clubs owe us a debt of gratitude however.
Nope. January is no good. That says nothing about resolve of a club wanting to keep their best players. Besides which, the players will welcome him back. Don't worry yourself about what's fair. You're looking at it completely from the outside and not getting the right perspective.
Think of it this way. The inclusion of VVD means that the team has a greater chance of winning. So the players get a bigger chance of a win bonus, so that's playing into their selfish gene.
