I can't understand how any club thinks it's worth paying £30m for a player who won't play until December at the earliest who is in the final year of their contract

...with the exception of Arsenal's late entry into the race, as you can almost see Wenger gloating about how he gazumped both Spurs and Chelsea while everyone rightly Photoshops his face onto the following meme

Barkley wants to come to Spurs. Chelsea have supposedly bid £25m and not a peep out of his camp. The only reaction was when it was rumoured he wanted top wages at Spurs. That was quashed wlithin hours.

Here's something I've never understood. People that played in the PL last weekend get a medical and occasionally fail them. Yet people think we are going to (or should) sign Barkley who hasn't played this season and won't for a while because he has a bad injury. How can you sign someone that can't possibly pass a medical?
I think the answer to that vim is that a medical is looking to confirm long term fitness and that would show up whether a current condition is temporary or permanent. OK you can't be 100% certain that, for example a broken leg, would heal with no detrimental effect on the players abilities but you cant be certain of that with a fit player. We could sign a player who could receive a career finishing injury a week later. Do clubs insure against that? Do they require the medical for insurance reasons?
The medical would be looking for potential long term problems like heart conditions.

A medical is more about the health of a player rather than current fitness levels. Being injured isn't a problem, so long as the injury isn't deemed as potentially recurring, while the player's general wellness (heart, blood etc) is also checked on to ensure that - while sounding gloomy here - they won't be having a heart attack or anything of that ilk any time soon.

If you remember, we signed Steed back in the day when he was currently injured, had to wait about 6 weeks for him to officially play.

...and once the OP is updated, everyone point and laugh at the following post...

Updates OP ... put £23m as that's the figure I kept seeing.

Very uncomfortable about signing someone who has made homophobic comments. To me they are as bad as racism. One of the things I liked about the lane was the was always a rainbow flag there.
On the other hand everyone has to be given a chance to change for ghe better...I hope he has.

As I said, I hope the club installed extreme
punitive/termination clauses in the Aurier contract
lest he repeats his PSG antics.

His public comment obviously makes it clear he has
been read a riot act of some sort.

Whilst I absolutely don't condone what he said, there is a world of difference between using homophobic language against someone who is actually homosexual and using it against someone heterosexual. The former means you are a narrow minded bigot and genuinely homophobic. The latter doesn't necessarily mean anything more than a profoundly childish immaturity when it comes to your choice of language - not all that difference from calling someone a '****' or the like on the school playground. Still a terrible thing for a supposed role model earning a fortune to do, but I do still think there is a clear difference.

Maybe I'm just insensitive, and apologise if that is the case.

Given that "phobia" means a strong or irrational hatred, what
language actually constitutes that against homosexuals ??

Similar for <Insert your world matter here>phobia.

Quality
Are you all happy about signing
Fernando Llorente?
Quality player, just not convinced that he will add what we need up front in terms of speed and mobility. Might be wrong, but he has the air of a Berbs - which I guess isn't the worst comparison <laugh>

Have to give the guy a chance, although I have similar concerns.
Hopefully you are right and he has learnt. Reading between the lines of the quotes in his statement, the club have clearly left him in no doubt that they will not accept any repetition.

Jaden Sancho is poised for a move to Dortmund. Apparently he has refused to turn up to training for the past week in an effort to force Fraudiola to either play him more, or to let him leave.

I have to say that if this is how arrogant and entitled he is at the ripe old age of 17, I shudder to imagine the size of his ego after he makes his first PL appearance or indeed aftee he pulls on an England shirt.

I never like to hear that players have gone on strike (unless they play for Arsenal or Chelsea), and the whole 'not in the right frame of mind' bollocks drives me mental. If this is what a 17 year old deems appropriate behaviour, it's a thanks but no thanks from me.

His agent has been totally called on this one.

Unless there is a stealth buy by one of Citehs' rivals
(or he is sold cheaply to <Standard> Liege) , none of
them deem the likely transfer/wage costs to match the
alleged talent.

I'm with you on this. Llorente is quality, but +30 and certainly won't improve our speed upfront.
Also, not convinced that we should offload Janssen even if he does come in. We would still be light in out and out towards. He's settled in and it would be difficult to get anyone better as back up for the back up!. Maybe a loan out til January?

I would love to see Janssen stay and come good for the team. That boy needs a confidence booster, he has bags of ability and I think he has shown a great attitude in the games he has come on in. Wherever he goes, given time, he will be a very good player.

I suspect that a Janssen loan deal may be the reason that
Swansea are not so interested in a Chelsky gazumping
on N'Lloriente.
