At last a bit of Brexit clarity from Labour, with Starmer saying that, under Labour, we would stay in the Single Market and Customs Union for a transitional period, which would be 'as short as possible, but as long as necessary'. Effectively permanently, then. Good.

Interesting story about the young (5 I think) white girl fostered into a Muslim family in east London. Sounds like a hard line Muslim family who have tried to indoctrinate her. Clearly wrong and how they were ever assessed as appropriate for fostering is beyond me.

Also of interest is the media's insistence on describing the child as a 'christian' girl. Really, aged five, you are able to make decisions about religion? What kind of Christian? Indoctrination from another direction. Apparently her parents call themselves Christian, but I didn't realise 'faith' is hereditary.

Assume that since, under the law, a child does not have a separate legal identity and is represented by its parents as guardians, the child takes on the religion of its parents until it is 18 and can legally make a decision of its own.

The problem for me is not that the foster parents were Muslim. Some moderate Muslims would do a reasonable job, just as some moderate Christians would do the same for a Muslim child. The problem here was 1. The foster parents only spoke Arabic and wanted the child to do the same 2. The Muslim foster parents were extremists - Wahhabists (which is becoming the dominant Muslim sect in the UK due to pc liberalism). The women wore hoods and masks, took a crucifix from the child's neck, told the child European women were worthless drunks, and would not allow it to eat bacon.

Extremely worrying. Tower Hamlets Council is not fit for purpose.

Just heard someone on the wireless say that fostering guidelines state that placements had to properly meet the child's needs, including religious needs. How does a five year-old (or anyone for that matter) have religious 'needs'? The obligation ought to be to protect the child from religious indoctrination (which plainly hasn't happened here) rather than to meet a non-existent need. We really must get away from defining children by their parents' bullshit religion.

Don't take the reference to pc liberalism personally, Stan. I'll amend it to pc-extreme liberalism. The spread of theocratic Wahhabism is a danger in this country to all the rest of us, including moderate muslims who want to live in a Britain with open, liberal values

It's got nothing to do with liberalism, Goldie. I'm a liberal (although not a Liberal) and I also see Wahhabists as being a problem that needs sorting out. I don't blame liberalism for the problem - I blame officialdom that never wants to deal with the hard issues if there's a get-out clause they can use to avoid being held responsible. So should you. It's about lack of action, not ideology.

I lived in Tower Hamlets between 1987 and 2013. Both education and social services are run at a local council level, and it really does need looking into. It's lost focus on who it should be working for. Mind you, so has Kensington & Chelsea.

There's nothing wrong with being a liberal, BD. And not all political correctness is wrong - there was a need for it coming out of the 1970's, when some vile racist jokes were rife and did nothing for harmony in society - and a woman's place was portrayed as being solely in the kitchen!

But pc has become pc extreme. And extreme liberalism is damaging. French people coming to this country are amazed that women are walking around with face masks and hoods. Wahhabism in the UK coming from Saudi Arabia is on the increase. Children of Muslim families are seen to be more extreme than their parents. Liberals need to take care that they do not defend those that attack the very tolerance this country is known for. We must all be intolerant of intolerance. In my view, the first step would be to ban the wearing of face masks in public as France has done successfully.
