Great in Euro 2004, but never reached the heights expected on the international stage...which was a great shame...basically because the players around him weren't good enough...eg. Beckham, et al.

Carried on for England for too long, but always played like it meant absolutely everything to him, unlike some of the ****s he played with who let him and all of England down.

A team with his ability and commitment and I'd probably get interested in watching England play again.

Terrific footballer and nothing but praise for him and his wife. He has made some mistakes in his life, who amongst us hasn't? The wonderful thing is that they sorted it and got on with their lives. Many knock Colleen because of her own personal success and that is more a reflection upon them than her. What has she done wrong?

I would always have preferred him to remain a striker, something Ferguson wasn't having, sadly - it weakened the England attack - maybe the Jock sod's intention... <whistle> an excellent, hard working, selfless midfielder, but he was always a really class striker.

He's done his bit for his country, more than Shearer who turned his back in his prime and when England really needed his talents, so good luck to him at the club he loves. <ok>

You might be waiting a long time.
Until we get a couple of players in midfield that can get us playing with more guille and zip were stuck with the slow laboured build up that's easy to defend.

To be fair on the lads who have represented us for decades now, they are more guilty of having inadequate skills and aptitude than poor attitude; but aye, pepper the team with a number of Rooney quality players and it changes everything.

It would also help if we allowed a single-minded coach to take them forward with the sort of support and commitment that Man Utd gave Ferguson - start by creating a domestic fixture calendar that creates space and development time for our national teams.

Reactions: Happy Tiger
My overriding feeling is what a shame it is that he's had no success with England. He's yet another one like Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes who's praised by everyone in the game upon retirement but you just think why did they never achieve anything with the national team.

ohhhh please the sobs and the woes a player announces his retirement from football hegemony .
[HASHTAG]#prayforrooney[/HASHTAG] .... anyway i thought he retired from international duty around 2006

He might have under delivered at international level, so has every other England player for a long time, and although he has a fine goal scoring record with them goals are easier to come by than in Greaves and Charlton's time as they didn't play as many friendlies or come on as subs so often in those days, his goal scoring record for Man Utd, despite not playing all the time as an out and out striker, shows he has been an exceptional player over a period of years.
Comments about not liking him are ridiculous. You judge him by his ability at what he does. If we judged people on whether we liked them based on what they were like in their personal life a lot of people would have to reassess their favourite rock stars, film stars etc as well as footballers.

remember when he played for Eng-er-land against the Argies in Switzerland in a friendly. He was great, but therein lies the problem. He was great in friendlies
