Sky Sports News @SkySportsNews BREAKING: @England's record goalscorer @WayneRooney has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect. #SSN
Thought he might have held on until after the WC. His experience at failing in international tournaments would have been invaluable.
Time for BBC and... erm... ITV to battle for his... erm... punditry services... erm... for the... erm... World Cup.
Interesting one, deservedly lost his place after about 3/4 years of not being the star man at Man U, and often being played in the hole or in CM, but looks to have rediscovered it up top for Everton back in his preferred position, would certainly have been an option if he'd kept it up, but fair play for ending it on his terms, sure Everton will be the main beneficiaries of this.
Its a shame he felt he had to give it in as he had more to give but he might as well focus on playing for Everton now, at least he's appreciated there.
Right decision IMO, takes away any decision Southgate may have had to make whether to include him or not. For him now better to just concentrate on his club football.
Southgate had decided to include him in the squad for the next two games, that's why he's announced it now.
Didn't realise that, I thought maybe he was trying to pre-empt him not being included by saying he was retiring, save the embarrassment.
