Strikes me as we wanted to try and show the fans that we were being strong while not killing the deal completely.

Buying Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and VVD is going to make about half of our first 11 ex Southampton players.
he could have been back in may but was not rushed... as in he was not needed and his career with us is over.
Right now he needs to get fit. he cannot be anywhere near fit so he will be pushed just to make it through preseason with the squad on the same schedule. If he's not on the same path he won't get many preseason games so will be in u23s.
I could see a loan in his short term future I think.
