Hey Ridlid, I'm just tucking into some Alpro Choc and Hazlenut ice cream.........good stuff <ok>

Just noticed I'm on the wrong thread

MITO mate, you're coming across as a proper 'sky era' fan.

Maybe that's the issue. Some fans like to have some loyalty left in their club, clearly you don't care for such things. That's fair enough if that's your bag.

Ill bet you if this question was posed to any pundit theyd say same

But most of all... bob paisley quote comes to mind. Let them age on someone elses pitch.

Shankley was infamous for not talking to injured players etc.

Dunno but seems to me not too many lfc stars of the past would say loyalty above results.

Again..

All i said is on the pitch business is what we are about. The lads got 70/80k per week so imo him staying is symptomatic of the issues we have had not a positive.

We've literally a cast of 1000s ex players whove moved on without any issue and can feel every love for the club and their time here.

Im just again saying it not loyalty keeping him... its hanging on and making do.

whilst not disagreeing with the above the problem is that Lucas last season was the best of the available options far too often ,as was Milner, which should never have occurred.
you have had players like Lucas round ManU squads but their depth was much greater

Exactly. Everyone needs a Lucas.

Our concern should be building a stronger squad in all area's. Lucas can stay and be called on if needed imo.
Plus his experience around the place is clearly an added bonus.

The trouble is MITO thinks we're Real Madrid <laugh>

Liverpool's hopes of finally landing a top left-back have been potentially handed a huge boost say L'Equipe who report that the Reds are now well-placed to sign Benjamin Mendy after his move to Manchester City stalled.

The £40million-rated defender is wanted by a clutch of top clubs, including several in England after his impressive displays for Monaco last season

What happened with the Man City 'stall'?

I don't believe this rumour for a minute tbh.

Loyalty is a funny thing.

Lucas has jumped at the chance to leave when the club accepted offers. Every time he's looked likely to leave, the club pulled the plug because of lack of options at that time.

Carragher was a one man club but how many teams actually tried to sign him? It's easy to be loyal when no one wants you.

Gerrard on the other hand could have gone to any club in the world but he chose to stay at Liverpool. Now that's loyalty. And loyalty cost him because a player of his quality deserved be winning more trophies and league titles.

Lucas is a great professional and has never whinged. But it's time to go.

Lets just look at history on this "making do"

LFC were nearly bankrupt under G&H

In the lead into this disaster

Krygiakos was bought to replace hyppia.... think about that one
We rehired aurelio when everyone knew the lads body wasn't up to it. he was a nice bloke too btw.

I believe initially kenny dalglish didn't really "make do" he just bought downing and adam who nobody else wanted of course for big money.. and Carroll... perhaps this period could be called.... over paying for trash

then we had rogers

loaned in sahin... loaned in cissokho... making do... we are a "big" club needing loan players? we loaned in moses

we bought the likes of aspas when linked with costa. balotelli when linked with sanchez... classic making do.

In fact need i go on?

SUrely this all points to

a) amatuer hour transfer policys
b) lack of resources
c) lack of football knowledge at upper levels

If we want to succeed AND the time of balancing the books is over then there is really no excuse for buying tosh or filling in gaps with a square peg in a round hole.

Lucas at CB with respect is a square peg in a round hole as is milner.

we need to actually break out of this now and build a proper squad.

If you get 3 CB injuries out of 4 proper CBs then fine ok do what you must but we had a cb with a known ankle injury, (matip) lovren, Klavan and??? so there you go we always planned imo to sell sakho.. failed to and then didn't have resources so made do with mr lucas at cb.

not great is it.

milner... klopp decided that very early and it worked for a while but he never rotated the guy and he looked absolutely dead for 3/4 months

Chelsea are set to chase Alexandre Lacazette, according to the latest reports from L’Equipe.
The Frenchman could be a good alternative to the €90 million Romelu Lukaku, but is also wanted by Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

With striker Diego Costa on his way out and Atletico Madrid ready to scoop him up, the Blues need to find an alternative

But Everton already spent most of the Lukaku money <yikes>

We won't "build a proper squad" by getting shot of everyone who isn't at the top level before we have someone who is.
It seems to me that people bemoan our lack of squad depth without actually having a firm grasp on what that means. If we expect to have two or three top, relatively equal players for each position -even key positions- then we're living in fantasy world.
Lucas is the very definition of a squad player for the level we've been at for the last few years. Can do a job, but needs to be improved upon if possible.
If, and when, possible -not jettisoned too early, leaving us with an even thinner squad.
It's not sentimentality, it's pragmatism.
