Former boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather will fight UFC champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match in Las Vegas on 26 August.

American Mayweather, 40, posted a video on Twitter confirming the details with the message: "It's official."

Irish UFC lightweight champion McGregor, 28, said: "The fight is on."

It is reported that each fighter could earn $100m (£78.4m) from the bout, which would be one of the richest in boxing history.

Former five-weight world champion Mayweather, widely considered the best boxer of his generation, retired unbeaten in 2015 after 49 bouts.

It followed a successful defence of his WBC and WBA welterweight titles, a victory that equalled Rocky Marciano's career record of 49-0.

Mayweather retired for the first time in 2008 after 39 fights.

Mixed martial artist McGregor, who has never boxed professionally, became the UFC's first dual-division champion in November 2016 and has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules.

His boxing licence was granted by the California State Athletic Commission in December, allowing him to box in the US state.

Lost respect for both of these over this. McGregor will gas out after about 4 rounds. Mayweather really should be winning this in the first round.

I'm backing Mayweather rounds 1-4 @15/2. I'm putting £150 of my winnings from McInnes on it. I'm hoping it's buying money. I'm putting £25 on McGregor round 1 @40/1. Just incase...

Basically it is an exhibition match which is why it will probably go to maybe round 8 with Mayweather knocking him out.

It goes towards Mayweather's boxing record though which is an absolute travesty. This should not be the fight that sees Marciano's record broken.

Mayweather is an incredible talent but he's the worst thing to have happened to boxing in decades.

Can't be any worse than the fight between Mohammed Ali and a Japanese wrestler.

That fight knocked years off Ali's life oddly enough. That didn't go towards Ali's record either. It was an exhibition match and as such is just a bit of a hybrid sports joke.

McGregor Mayweather is a certified boxing match and makes an absolute mockery of boxing.

Joke is the word. It was just embarrassing to watch.

Mcgregor will lose but it will be by points or stoppage. I cant see Mayweather knocking him out.

Fully agree mate and record breaking aside, they both stand to make $100m from the fight, that's just taking the piss out of genuine fighters and fans.

Its typical of the Americans to even think of this charade in the first place nevermind making it actually happen.
Mcgregors in a win win situation. Hes going to walk away with 100m regardless and If he loses he'll just remind everybody hes an mma fighter and not a boxer and offer Mayweather a crack at him in the cage.

Agreed mate, either way you toss it up, it makes a mockery of the sport and should never be allowed to happen. They'll both walk away richer men, but for the sake of Boxing I hope Mayweather batters McGregor and if Mayweather is really up for it then I honestly can't see this one going past 3 rounds.

I didnt even know about this. Who won?

Pretty sure the Japanese lad won or it was a draw.

As Disco mentioned above, it was an exhibition bout. Dont recall if there was a winner. The wrestler spent virtually the whole fought on his back kicking Ali if I recall correctly.

Yeah the rules were so weird that that was all he was able to do. The kicks to Ali's legs caused blood clots which caused massive problems later on. Heartbreakingly stupid idea.
