Manchester United are set to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon ace Gelson Martins, according to a O Jogo report.
The Portuguese media outlet claims United manager Jose Mourinho is interested in signing 22-year-old right-sided attacker as he looks to bolster his forward options this summer.
This comes after Sky Sports stated in a report on their website that the Merseysiders had opened talks with Sporting over a possible move for Martins.
Sky Sports claim the 22-year-old has a release clause of £46.5million, but he could he available for offers of just under £40million “in the right circumstances”.
The right-winger was one of Sporting’s top performers last term, providing 14 assists in 44 league and cup games, as well as scoring seven goals.
He broke into the first team at the Portuguese giants in the summer of 2015, and he has since made 88 appearances in all competitions, which have yielded 14 goals and 18 assists.
Martins has been capped by Portugal on six occasions, and he featured for 57 minutes on Friday night as his side beat Latvia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
Mourinho is looking to strengthen his squad this summer ahead of a serious title challenge next term, while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp needs additions to his team if they are to reach the latter stages of the 2017/18 Champions League.

from the reports i've seen Southampton knew all 3 clubs had contact they called us out for just taking it to extremes. The Chelse one ,who knows but if you want a conspiracy theory VVD doesn't fancy ManC but they are prepared to offer the biggest transfer fee.
