How ridiculous was this announcement?

Only a few weeks ago, we had the solid eye to the camera assertion by May that a general election would be disastrous for the country at a time when we should all be focused on the negotiations for Brexit and that would be an unnecessary distraction. And that she wouldn't do it. What has changed since then apart from her conviction that she would win a larger majority?

Can we believe what a politician says? That they would do this or that in power ?

We live in the Trump era, of fake news when we simply cannot believe any statements as they may just be overturned the next day.

Have you noticed May talks in her speeches about me and I, it's all about power for her...
President May...

Just watch the jargon flow.

Get the job done (which ignores 48%)
End to free movement (despite discovering the vast majority already here an be naturalised by law already)
Blah blah blah

I don't think I have heard a real may policy out of her yet.

What's changed is that the Tory Grandees have TOLD her to call one....

They know fine well that Brexit is going to be a car crash and the deal is going to be absolutely ****e, so the 2020 election date was fraught with risk. They're seeking to hammer home a political advantage with Labour being so low in the polls, by bagging an extra 2 years to try and sort out the ensuing mess.

What I find a complete insult to the intelligence is the completely disingenuous reasons given for this about turn. It'll assist the Govt in their negotiations with the EU if they have a larger majority.....sorry, say what now? How the **** does that tangibly make a ****es worth of difference?

She used the excuse that the 'opposition' were going to try and derail Brexit - which hasn't happened at all so far, they've voted with the Govt in a huge majority - so we can put that one in the lie category. Especially given that the Tories already have an overall majority, so it's impossible for the opposition to collectively overrule them on anything relating to Brexit......the real reason - to reduce or remove the threat of revolt from within her own party......whether that be from the far right or the more centric - take your pick as to which section she's trying to silence.....

She's a suit full of **** all imo, she's got nothing but speeches written by aides and meaningless soundbites that stand up to zero scrutiny, combined with hollow words and patronising platitiudes. The women is a fraud, hence the reason she's bottled the live debates.

I think it's purely polls are far too positive to ignore

I agree may has been given a list of approved phrases and she has been allowed to prattle on.

I'm sure she meant no election as far as she knew but once she was told then she simply did an about face.

In many ways she is incredibly dangerous as she will do anything she is told to do.

the 2 stock Tory phrases for the GE appear to be
Coalition of Confusion
Stable & secure Government

i love the stable part coming from someone who does more cartwheels that you see in a gymnastic routine

I actually think the Lib Dems might grab this.

I can see this falling into a brexit v remain v left v right sort of fight.

Labour are going no where with Corbyn plus everyone knows hes secretly pro brexit.

Tories will lose the remain vote. I also think they will lose their working class brexiteers who are probably more interested in keeping their benefits with which the tories have been trying to cut a few times.

Leaves everyone with Lib Dems

Basically the only good thing is its a short campaign with a disasterous ending.

We all know what's coming

Whilst I think they'll win quite comfortably, I don't think they'll have this all their own way.

The TV companies are on about doing an 'empty chair' leaders debate for a start off, which will damage May's credibility, despite the bullshit spin.

Remain voters will be tactical in their voting to try and oust a Tory imo.

I doubt it somehow. I really don't think 48% will sit down and work out how to oust a tory in their own constituencys

I just think the toys will have a 2/3rds majority in house of commons by the end of this.

SNP the 3rd largest party still imo.

That's where the Tory plan goes to **** if people vote tactically and I agree with you I think they will, I'm looking at the Liberal Democrats as a serious option.
I'll be voting Liberal, for the first time in my life. I live in a Tory constituency but have always voted Labour even though I knew it counted for zip, but not this time.

I think you're underestimating the level of feeling about Brexit by the seemingly irrelevant 48%, who have been airbrushed out of existence by the 'Will of the people' mantra.

**** 'em, time to give them some back, will be how many see it.

Only way I can see this happening is if the other parties seriously apply a pact regarding candidates in winnable constituencies. I think the likes of Lib Dems and Greens would be up for this but Labour will be too arrogant and believe they can go alone.

Just enough people will continue to be trible and split the vote in seats that could be taken by one anti Brexit candidate vs the Tory...especially in seats where the Tory was previously pro EU too...forces them to re-engage in their pro EU views...embarrassing for May, or u turn and toe the line, losing wet pro eu Tory voters.

I thought you lived near Liverpool?

Does such thing as a Tory constituency exist in Merseyside or surrounding area? If so, things have changed.
