I could've said "they", but I don't like referring to a single 3rd person in the plural, it's one of the misuses of English that really annoys me, constantly referring to one person as "he/she" makes posts unreadable and laborious and you can't really refer to a person as "it".

Sounds more like a bloke said it, but it's also got an air or Mary Whitehouse about it, so could be a woman too, but I'd say 60% chance it was a he.

Storm; teacup; people taking themselves too seriously. If he'd said it to a bloke and the bloke offered him out, would we think the bloke was over-reacting? I would. But he said it to a bird and now it's "bullying". **** me. I hold no brief for the bulgy-eyed jock (ooh - racism!), but this is a complete bunch of arse.

A complete non-story! That's why the Daily Mail has it up near the top of their web page. It's what they do best!

I agree though - the "chilling warning" FFS!! I love how the feminists are only feminist when it suits there argument - if he hadn't added then "even tough you're a woman" bit, they'd probably have called him for threatening to hit a woman!!!

To be fair Moyes could make asking if you wanted a biscuit with your brew sound chilling so if he said he was going to slap you it'd feel more like he said he was going to peel your skin off your face.

He's wrong about "they" anyway. It is the correct gender-neutral third person pronoun. If there's one thing worse than the pedantic, its when the pedantic get it wrong.

Rather than being any distinct wrong or right this has been a debate for a very long time, and I support the singular reference. Was a specific point in national English exams not so long ago and we'd be marked down for using singular they.

And my username isn't relevant, that might just be my surname, ya never know.
 
Apologies if already mentioned but do people think there would have been this outcry if it was a male journo he said it to? I think not. So in a way this is reverse sexism by those using it against Moyes (who is a **** and should be sacked but not for this)
 
Goes to show one thing though that he's losing the plot, IMO.

If I told one of the women we do business with that I'd 'slap them' or for them to 'be careful next time' I reckon I'd probably end up in a bit of bother with the MD.
