Slightly more off topic

Hiring a digger is exactly what I had in mind. But as mentioned it's a lot to shift and would probably take me a few months as I'd be too busy pissing about.

Both neighbours gardens are the same and to be honest it's part of the appeal having some proper privacy without the need for hulking 10' steel fencing. I'm thinking hot tub parties here... <whistle>

I know the costs associated with laying a patio, I can do that piece of piss, it was the earth removal I was wondering about.

Maybe a few sticks of dynamite would be more cost effective.
it was all going oh so well until the last line..

Anyone know how much excavating a garden costs? House we're looking at the whole garden is elevated about 4' higher than the floor of the ground floor. This means you can hardly see the back of the garden from downstairs and access is only possible from the side.

Thinking of digging around a 15/20' x 20ft section out immediately behind the house and laying a patio but I've absolutely no idea how much hiring a digger, operator and waste soil removal is likely to cost. Probably too much for it to be worthwhile.

Left how it is the back door would have to be upstairs in the bedroom <laugh>

Anyone?
How big is the garden? Can you lose some of the earth from 15/20' x 20ft section to the back of the garden, or would it be too high?

Get it on ebay.

Top soil for sale, buyer to collect. <ok>

Any of your neighbours got enough of a sense of humour to be amused when they come home to find you've started a super rockery for them?

Seriously I recommend you watch The Great Escape. Bags of soil being shaken from trousers, and soil disposal in the attic.

I hired one for the weekend to shift a load in the front garden.

When he turned up I offered him £50 to do it for me, he had the large skip filled & had ****ed off within the hour. He was happy I was happy.

There'll be more **** than you think, I filled an additional mini skip with shovels afterwards.

Don't know what prices are like where you live but for me I think I'd be looking at around £100/day to hire a digger, £150/day to hire an operator. If you need skips then around £200 a time, or if you have somewhere to stack the soil up where a grab lorry can reach it might cost about £150 a load. A 20'x20'x4' section is a lot of earth, skips would cost you a fortune. Then you'll be wanting a load of aggregate for the patio base, hire of a wacker plate, patio slabs. I'd guess you're looking at a fairly serious 4-figure number.

I think it'll be cheaper to raise the house..

i go for the ebay idea as we did the same for me mates allotment.
allotments sink or loose soil etc so advertise it for free if they collect it themselves.
you could dig the soil out yourself so you can stll have a go on the digger!!!!

How come you had that many shovels to get rid of?!

Now this thread has turned into a general advice thread I'm after advice on what power washer to buy it's for the patio mainly but if I get one it might also encourage me to clean the car. I obviously want it to be good enough to do the job, last a fair while but be cheap as I'm a tight git

According to Which, this is the best value for the performance...

I've got a Karcher which is okay.

The mrs, a strong yard brush and a bucket of soapy water. <ok>

My mates father in law came round one day with his new Karcher to clean his patio as a "surprise" for him. Silly old twat blew all the pointing out! <laugh><laugh>
My mate spent ages redoing it.

Get one for the car and one for the patio. Small £50 nilfisk jet wash is ideal for the car. You don't want anything too big or you risk damage. Foam lance is a must have along with 3 or 4 different shampoos, 5 different wash mits, wheel woollies, about 19 different types of cleaner, 5 different waxes and sealants, various trim restorers, 100 microfibre cloths, a mop, 10 different bottles of polish....

Just don't even think about it, **** the car.

For the patio you'll need a £300 unit if you want to do it quickly with a patio brush. A small jetwash will do it but you'll have to use the fan nozzle and spend ages going round bit by bit covering a 3" or so long thin line.

Go for a nilfisk over a karcher, by and large the same machines with different price tags but the biggest difference is all nilfisk have a metal pump where as the sub £500ish karchers (k1-k3) all have plastic pumps and are an overpriced pile of ****e.

Forget about any bollocks you might see in Aldi or wherever. Same as the rest of their non food stuff.
