Maynard is a20 goal a season striker, fast and entertaining to boot - £5m would be top whack (Leicester's interest has maybe pushed his price up a bit)
Aside from the other signings, I think spending £5m on Maynard would scream ambition, and give a warning shot to the division that we really mean business this season. I think whatever proven championship striker we sign we're going to have to overpay.
If either of us have a bid accepted for Maynard then Bristol will announce it. They announced we have had 3 bids rejected for him aswell so I doubt they will keep quiet now. If either of us has a bid accepted they announce it, it will force the other clubs to either out bid or match the same bid if there still interested. Should be good seasons for both of us
Not sure you can say that Maynard is a 20 goal a season striker as he has only actually done this once in his entire career, 2009/10 season. No doubt he is a quality striker but we would not be buying a guarenteed 20 goals (although with us he probably would get 20!). Definantly would show ambition to sign him though. Still for the money being spoken about think there must be better options
Maynard isn't a 20 goal a season player - he doesn't have a problem with scoring but from what I've seen his overall play more than makes up for goalscoring.
Oh dear am I on my own in thinking Maynard is not for us. Have seen him play twice maybe so is it harsh to make such a judgement based on a couple of game? You see he is not in my opinion an all round striker like for instance Ricky is. Ricky can and often does hold up play enough for others to move into spaces. He will then feed them with a pass. Maynard would do well in these situations it is true. However Maynard does not to me have that skill to return the complement. We already have players that can score goals but can they make them.......not often. Connolly is probably the exception. So a big no from me regarding Maynard......leave him be is what I say.....let him leave BC on a free from January. Too pricey in any case...........
We'ree in for Maynard and I would guess that any offer you put up we'll match. I'd say that we'd offer higher wages as well.
Would he walk straight into a starting place or has he some opposition to stave off, I know you have bags of loot but I haven't been following your progress within the squad.
Agree that you would match any offer however not sure about wages or about attraction of the club tho 'Crown Jewels'! We had simular average attendances but that was when we were in league one so we should average higher than you this season, we have better training facilities, a better stadium (in my opinion!) and most importantly with us Maynard would be much more integral to the success of the club where as at Leicester he would just be another one of a shed load of signings. I think when combined with our manager and ambitious chairman we would be the more attractive proposition to a player like Maynard. However... saying all that I think there is a much higher chance of you signing him then us and actually would rather we didn't pay such a large reported price! Haha
Well we have Nugent but Maynard would take Vassells place with ease. We have been spending big to get one of (If not the) best back five and midfield in the league but our strikeforce is relegaions fodder (bar Nugent) I can't see us getting autos if we don't get a real top notch striker in.
I disagree. The only thing I would say that would affect Maynards decision is wages, club and location. 1) We could offer much higher wages, we can offer up to 35k p/w with the wage structure we have (last season we paid Yakubu 55k p/w 2) I feel Leicester are more of an attractive club with the ambition, manager, training facilities and players. 3) I think southampton is a much nicer place than Leicester, however saying that you only have to go half an hour out of town to find wonderful countryside.
I guess it depends on what type of person Maynard is. If he is motivated more by money then you may be right and be willing to pay a ridiculous figure (like you did with the Yak). However, where I think we will always disagree is which club is more attractive (for obvious reasons). We both have the ambition of premier league but we are both taking differing approaches - You = splash the cash, Us = build up the club with a more sustainable approach. There is no way that Sven and whoever your actual chaiman/owners are are more attractive than ours. Facilities is a no contest I'm afraid, we have some of the best in the whole country (including premier league). Just depends on the players personal views on what he is after I guess
Adkins has just said on OS that it's important that we don't break our wage structure. I agree with that..you can't build team spirit if there is too wide a disparity between player's income. That may cut us out of some signings if money is the important thing and, lets face it, to most of us it would be.
I'm delighted that Nige is taking that approach. Remember the divisions it caused when we got the (then hopeless) Mark Hughes on board on supposedly double the wages of MLT. We have a very together squad right now that doesn't need to be unsettled. If Maynard wants to go to Leicester on 35k a week let him go. There are other options.
I wouldn't mind signing for Maynard for 5 million as long as we get a 5 year deal and no sell on fee!! Made up about fox signing... Bow competition will be very stiff!! Can now start believing we will make a top 6 push!! In adkins and cortèse we trust!
