If it were possible i would have gone to the local police station and offered my services in any capacity. Im sure they would have used some unpaid volunteers. The only problem i have is the budget cuts mean fewer new officers are being hired.

I have looked, but they dont offer the flexibility and ask for too many hours per week. I can only do every other weekend on average, and 4-5 hours most days, but they ask for more than that. Once i finish uni it is an option as a step up the ladder if you like.

Dont even mention PCSO's though anyone!! I wont even consider it, i dont see the point in training someone almost the same as you train a police officer which costs the same, but then give them half the powers??? They do a good job of crowd control, but little else from what i have seen

"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have
no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all
restraint. They talk as if they alone knew everything and what passes
for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for girls, they are
forward, immodest and unwomanly in speech, behaviour and dress."

That quote is about 800 years old.

    Good morning Norway

That was a good observation it was said by Plato but he attributed it to Socrates. It was also said over 2,500 years ago not 800. Make you think.

Similar start also to the Fall of Rome.

:) - and yet it is ME who gets accused of being a dog with a bone :) Remember it was you two not me who wanted to prescribe WHERE we post - I don't care so long as I am allowed to open a thread of my choice. Off topic is good to me. Sorry OFH :)

I never thought I would think like this as 20 years ago I was much more to the left. However looking over the last few nights there seem to be two issues - as others have already said. There are some just common criminals who see an opportunity and take it. Then there are some who feel somehow that their lives are rubbish and their prospects too. I am not here going to go into whether that is their fault or society's as it does not help. However I do now wonder whether if there was some form of Conscription at age 16 for 2 years it might not help. Anyone in full time education or in a full time job could opt out but not anyone who wanted any form of state benefit. I would keep the Conscription "open" up to the age of say 21 so that someone who falls out of the net of education or employment is covered to that age. The benefit of this is that nobody aged 21 or under would be left without hope of a worthwhile job. It would also instil a form of discipline into youngsters that for whatever reason they may have missed in their youth. I would include in the areas for Conscription perhaps more than the Armed Forces if need be - maybe the Police or other Emergency Services for those who object to war or whatever.

I am sure that these ideas could be refined a lot but are a sort of "off the top of my head " thought.
