What do you mean, us letting Fonte go in the last two weeks of the window could have stopped what transfer? Mane, Wanyama? Van Dijk this summer/summer after?

Unless I've missed something your solution to our problem of our captain and club legend wanting a transfer (And to a select few clubs, not just wanting to leave full stop) is just to have actively tried to sell him, meaning selling him for a poor price to whomever takes him. Surely you can see that is not a solution to any of our problems, given the whole battle over our image as a 'selling club'. How does that stop any transfers rather than completely undermine our bargaining power with players and clubs? The only possible upside to that mad powerplay is Fonte and Mendes somehow weakly buckling and accepting a new contract.

The (realistic) options I can see are:

Refuse to let him leave, no contract offer.
Refuse to let him leave, club-friendly contract offer.
Refuse to let him leave, player-friendly contract offer.
Set his price where we want it for anyone to match, same three contract variables.
Set his price where we want for non-PL to match, same three contract variables.
Set his price for anyone/non-PL, accept only on condition of acquiring a replacement we want, same contract variables.
Actively try and sell him.
Can't think of any more, release him I guess?

All have various pros/cons and branching possible outcomes, none are ideal because the bottom line is the only outcome we want is him accepting a new contract, or his current one I suppose. Once that isn't possible then it's just a matter of working for the best case scenario, which we have tried to do (and possibly succeeded, who knows?).

So basically I think your equation is incomplete. Is the situation resolved now? No. Should it have been? Yes. Could it have been? No. (Unless said resolution is the nuclear option)
We clearly had an offer for him hence his Europa exclusion. He clearly knows about it hence rejecting improved terms and now handing in a transfer request. I'm firmly in the "If they don't want to be here let them go" camp so I would have forced the issue to reach a resolution. My point about it being used to stop another transfer was purely in response to suggestions that the fans would have gone batshit crazy if YET ANOTHER departure happened this summer. Clearly keeping a disgruntled Fonte has backfired. That in a nutshell is my entire point.

I thought he was on about £70k at the moment (and turned down something more like £100k) which is more like £3.5m a year. Not that that really changes your point.

Even so, it's not totally irrelevant. I mean I'm sure he could retire today and live what most people would consider a comfortable life in a 3 bed semi somewhere. I imagine he's used to a certain lifestyle though and will want to maintain that as best he can for the rest of his life.

You were linking an average persons salary over 60-70 years and how short their window was to earn big money. We weren't talking about the comparative lifestyles.

If it wasn't Dry January (and a point to prove with my other half) I would.

Sometimes I do this:
Bottle of Merlot 450 calories.
Slice of bread 65 calories.
Butter 45 calories.
600 Calories for the day.

Nice fast day :)
I used to have weight watchers ****e in a box 300. Half a tin of beans 100. Bottle of vino 400ish. 800 worked just as well as 600 for me.

But oh how I've enjoyed putting it all back on.

ah, the old 5/2 diet? It's brilliant, isn't it. I went from 15 1/2 st to just under 12 in about 6 months, though I'm fortunate in that I don't drink, sometimes I just have a cake on my fast day, it's around 600calories. on my eating days I eat w/e I want, usually start off with a sausage and cheese omelette in a french bread stick with heinz firecracker sauce

Well I can't imagine any discussion where your lifestyle is irrelevant to your salary but I wasn't really linking the salary particularly or trying to suggest that a footballer earns the same wage in 10-15 years as a "normal" person does over a lifetime.

The real point is that the earning pattern of a footballer (or any sportsman) is very different to the earning pattern of most people. Most people are able to work and earn whatever their wage is until they are 60 or 70 while sportsmen have a limited time in which they are able to earn "silly" wages. That being the case there is more urgency/need for them to maximise their earnings while they can. If footballers were able to earn £70k a week until 65 then they might be a little less interested in moving for higher wages.

Yep while we're veering off topic, I went from 13 ½ stone to 10 stone 10 lbs in 3 months in 2015. Kept it all off until November 2016 when the 5:2 became the 7:0. Back up to 12 ½, but hoping to be under 12 by 1st Feb. Problem is I am sooooooooooo grumpy* on fast days :)

To go back on topic:

I'm glad he submitted a transfer request. Saves us from seeing him deteriorate here. And I'm glad he'll deteriorate on the Man U bench 3-4 million pounds richer.

*I also become a bit bipolar on the 5:2 fast days. This is an 'up' moment.

I imagine the day is all over pretty fast once you've guzzled the merlot on an empty stomach.

He gets called out when he preaches how far we can go and then gets called out when he gives a very realistic statement.... damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Who'd be a football chief eh? :)

It was more a tongue in cheek comment to be honest!

Not keen on selling players mid-season, especially ones which are crucial to our squad. If he wants to go, let him go in summer when we can line up a replacement, rather than having to scramble to fit a gap in our squad.

This.

Espescially as theres issues in our squad which seriously need addressing as it is.
