It was probably framed within the club as Puel's decision to give him a stamp of authority over the squad? You know, "if I can drop him, I can drop anyone" Sadly, he just randomly drops EVERYONE for any old reason anyway. So it wasn't a master plan of psychological warfare to get the squad in line.

As far as I've been told, some players are now even past caring if they will be selected as their form doesn't seem to have much to do with it and they struggle to understand the manager's reasoning's.

I'd refuse it personally, tell him to play until the Summer where we will take a lower fee opening up more clubs of choice to him.

Then the minute that deal is done, I'd be taking Virgil aside and saying "sorry Virgil, we can't be replacing both of you in the same window. You were happy enough to sign a 6 year deal, now we need another year out of you."

I've heard that, recent form aside, VVD is relatively happy here. Obviously money talks but I think he's here for next season at least.

Watch him go to everton on a mahoosive wage. Kinda glad its fonte and not virgil tho
