Controlled burn fella. They set fire to the Invasive gorse, to clear it for new plants to grow and to encourage flora and fauna diversity. There are Dartmoor Ponies up here too, so they will finish the job by grazing back the grass to allow new plants to grow.

And to think a Lewisham lad knows all of this ...

That's a massive problem in California. There was a huge fire there when I was there last in 2015 (I was actually there, not 'HIAG' there). It was called the rough fire and burned for something like 3 months and destroyed miles of forest and several properties. There was speculation that it was a lightning strike that caused it, but other theories were that somebody just chucked a *** end in the scrub.

I've seen a fire start in the dry scrub in the chapparals, when a car reversed into some dry grass in a parking lot and the heat from the exhaust pipe ignited the tinder dry grass.

 

I was there that year, the drought was about the worst in living memory for them.

 

Yep, really bad. The lakes in the foothills of Sequioa national park were the lowest I've ever seen them.

Where abouts were you ? I spent a couple of weeks in San Clemente, my wife was doing a Yoga teacher training course. Then we travelled up to Ojai to stay with some friends and to do some business with a health food business owner who lives up there. We then drove up to Yosemite for a week, going through Sequioa national park.

Last day in work, gonna really go at Fallout 4 on the Xbox tomorrow.

 

We were on business in Miami, then flew across to San Fran, then down the coast road to Monterey etc, then down to the edge of LA before heading inland and ending up in the mountains at Lone Pine, before doing the drive through death valley to Vegas.

Well if that's where you spend your time, that's where you know. Remember when I was in Spain a few years back, hot summer and some bush fires, was a sight watching the Fire Brigade helicopters doing their thing.

 

Cedar shake and cedar shingle roofs are outlawed in California these days , British Columbia Canada also I think ...one ember and it could be hell on earth these days . We had a massive fire in Northern Canada in Fort McMurray , Alberta last summer .The drought conditions iin Western North America are more than troubling

 

I have been all over the States, as it happens.

 

I know plenty of people who do, myself included.
