George passed his driving test late in life, he must have been early to mid thirties. He was living in Hampstead and bought himself a Range Rover of all things, he was not the best of drivers. He would invariably find himself in College Crescent (Swiss Cottage) at around 2 in the morning as in those days that was the only 24 hour convenience shop (Nikel & Dime) for miles around, he was usually in a pretty state and would use this time to try to take his 2 Great Danes for a walk. Congregated here would be always around 20 night mini cab drivers taking their coffee preparing for the morning rush and discussing their evening. It was on quite a few occaisions that George was in no fit state to drive home, the mini cab drivers would make sure to drive both him, his dogs and the car back to his house and on many occaisions get him inside. George, when sober never forgot them, he would always look after them and make time for them, these people were from a completely different background, Afghanis, Pakistanis, Indians and Nigerians mostly - yet he always had time for them. I saw him first at the National in Kilburn at their very first gig - I saw him last in CPH, invited to the after party as a guest of a friend with my wife. My wife always thought the story was some BS I'd made up - she was choked when she saw his reaction to me bringing up that story to him. I did not know him well, maybe twice or three time we passed, but I was an aspiring amateur singer a few years younger,( Mikey Most at his St. John's Wood studios said I had talent but needed to lose the porky look), a friend that looked like Andrew - the bond was there for me. I have never been star strucked, I have met plenty in my time, but George, oh George what a lovely, lovely man. Some kind of irony takes me to South Oxey tomorrow for a 50th birthday - very close to where the family restaurant was in Bushey - will take a drive by and roll one up in his honour. RIP George, a tormented soul that never harmed anyone, thanks for the memories, for the music that will live on forever.
Richard Adams, author of my favourite book Watership Down...died today aged 96 It is a truism....if you make it through to 2017 you will become immortal
Sadly Carrie Fisher never recovered from last weekend's heart attack, the 'Grim Reaper' claims another. RIP...
Yet another well known name that's been taken too young as a result, for whatever reason, of years of substance abuse. RIP Carrie Fisher
Am I the only one that's getting irritated by the lazy reporting of the likes of the BBC? Because we have Twitter, where every Z-lister can share their banalities with the world, it is all too easy for the Beeb to fill up their column inches with just how sad William Shatner, Pixie Lott or Stephen ****ing Fry feel at the death of somebody they probably knew no better than I did. How is what Stephen Fry thinks about the death of Debbie Reynolds news? Next up: Gary Numan tweets about how sorry he is that Meryl Streep has a slight sniffle.
Like....... Mrs TR and I were only saying the same thing this morning.......we then switched over to Sky News who were going through the same motions with one "celeb" posting that her heart was "literally" breaking at the news......Er no, if that was the case you'd be dead as well....literally. Happy New Year all.....
Was also reading this morning how the feminists have turned on Steve Martin for his tweet about Carrie Fisher. Twitter appears to be full of miserable c*nts who can't wait to jump on anyone not absolutely politically correct or not to the left of the luvvy brigade. I'm still waiting for Lily Allen to emigrate after Brexit...
Agree. If a friend or former colleague has something interesting to say, fine, but the usual "Devastated, don't know how I'll get through the day, RIP" from someone who's never met the deceased is just not reportable news but is typical of precious, dumbed down celebrity-news
Have you noticed how more celebs have died since this thread was started - build it and they will come
Just read that Zsa Zsa Gabor's adopted son Oliver has died a week after his mother. He was in a car crash on the day his mother died and never regained consciousness...
Hopefully I won't come across as sexist...but I cannot see anything wrong with his comment. Surely it is normal human behaviour to notice someone before trying to get to know someone?? Then again maybe I'm a dinosaur who is living in the wrong century.....
