I don't know the man, of course. If I've got you right, you do. As you are a poster I respect, I'll take your word for it. Doesn't change my view. I wish very few people ill. OK, push comes to shove, I would have found it hard to feel sorry for Thatcher when she left office. Pardew's list of offences against humanity are in a lesser league, and he did leave a decent legacy for Nigel Adkins.

Merry Xmas, DTLW
I don't feel sorry for any Premier League manager. I would change places with any of them in a heartbeat. (If I could last a season, I'd be made for life).

I'm sure the money softens any blow, but I would still draw attention to the saying " never judge a man til you've walked a mile in his shoes".

Having held a high pressure management job in a completely different industry, but one with similarly unrealistic expectations, where you are expected to achieve miracles with inadequate resources, getting the blame from everyone for everything that goes wrong, and being entirely dependent for results on a team over which you only ever have limited influence, I can say you need to be nuts to want to be a manager, in any walk of life.

Well I am a little nuts!

Christmas must be tough for referees - a lot of travelling in a short space of time to be done.

Also - is there a rule that says linesmen MUST be in shorts and t-shirt? They must get so cold during a match over winter, with very little running to do, would have thought it could impair their ability to make accurate decisions if they're very cold?

You actually do a LOT of running on the line. Linesmen will not get cold trust me.
