When he came to the Pl he was an innovator, although I would contest that his direct opponents, i.e. United, were better and the football we played was better. I don't buy into this 'best football' nonsense but I will and always have given credit to Wenger for what he has done. In the past. You talk like he's still doing it, he isn't. His success on the field and in developing players, although I stand by my opinion that it begins and ends with Ashley Cole, is all a distant memory. He'll not get it back either, that game has moved on now and younger innovators are out there.
My 2 cents; Wenger tends to go for unfinished players, who he (and his coaching team) can try and develop. It's pretty hit and miss, and has probably been more miss of late considering the money in the Prem and who he competes against. He hasn't adapted his philosophy to keep up. There was a slight indication he had with the signings of Ozil and Sanchez, but hasn't continued that on so they have fallen behind Mourinho tends to go more for the finished article - but even that is more difficult now, as they are so expensive. So will have to buy 1 or 2 like that, and then try to buy a few more he can develop (like Bailly)
The irony is of course, that Wenger's best player is a player that Mourinho signed as a (21 yo) young star for Real Madrid and developed him into a world class midfielder. Arsene Wenger has somehow managed to find a way to make the lad look like **** half the time.
The only thing significant to me is Wenger got the best out of the young players he spotted and brought along . I bet that list saintalive posted ,altogether, cost less than Pogba .
True, but times have changed, Roofie. Also, I want someone to draw up a list of the donkeys that Wenger has signed. I bet it is just as long as SA's list.
Eden Hazard last season and Paul Pogba this season..... I forgot to add Bellerin to my previous list.
I bet it did, given they were all bought over ten years ago bar Nasri, who was bought nine years ago. If you think Wenger has been successful with every player he 'discovered' (i.e. poached from another club) then you need to give your head a wobble. Most of the time they fail or stagnate. Has Walcott been a roaring success? - No Has Oxlade Chamberlain? - No Has Aaron Ramsey? - No He does get success. Vieira, van Persie and Henry flourished under Wenger, I would consider them to be great acquisitions, but they were hardly unknown and they are the exception to the rule. The rule is he buys cheap and his success rate is not that good.
For a change , I spare you the " Manchester list " .... good luck making Champions League ...sincerely .
What you on about? United discovered Shaw at Southampton, discovered Rooney at Everton, discovered Herrera at Bilbao, discovered Martial at Monaco. Do I need to go?
What's Hazard and Pogba got to do with Arsene Wenger? Forget about Hazard anyway, the entire team failed to turn up for Jose, after winning the league, just like the LCFC players did this season for Ranieri... that says more about the mentality of the modern footballer than Jose Mourinho.
What is true is that both managers have been bailed out by one player this season, a 35 year old genius called Zlatan for Mourinho and Alexis Sanchez for Wenger.
