Dude why is the darts so popular in england?! Such an intense sport. I'm struggling to hit the board at this point.... Let's ****ing run them tomorrow
O

I think Sky have helped with the popularity. It started as a pub game with fat blokes drinking beer live on tv whilst chucking a few arrows.
Not they don't drink.

Darts has been around a long time on TV since the mid 70s when I first started playing, it used to get decent coverage in the 80' when Bristow was No.1.

The top players split from the governing body in the early 90s and into a deal with Sky.
As ACS has said, Sky have helped with the popularity, particularly in recent years with the advent of the Premier League, and the increase in prize money.

As a spectator sport, it's a cracking night out at a big PDC tourno.
Cut throat where only the best survive these days.

Hmm yeah I was relatively intoxicated when I posted this. I went on a cricket run for the guiness books last night.

I remember, a million years ago when the rocks were still cooling, and I was at college I was dragged into the college's darts team as I had the required skills; i.e. the ability to drink my own body weight whilst still remain standing.

First night, I was having the usual gallon or relax in the opponents' pub when they replaced the board with their match board. That was the first time I had ever seen a 'Yorkshire board' and with my vision already going at the edges it was the weirdest experience ever.

For those who have never come across a Yorkshire Board - it's the same as a regular board but without the treble ring. So that means that everything one knew about the game had just gone out of the window...
