    To the comments re Scholes

He was a very good player - still is pretty decent. BUT the way people go on about him you'd think he invented the game.

    Over-rated doesn't mean they're not good.

Also... Mikel. Paid to play football.

Before I name mine, can I just check, by "over-rated", are we including Dennis Wise's YouTube scouting recommendations?

Steven Fletcher - Not saying he's bad really but I'd rate him alongside the likes of Leroy Lita and Kevin Doyle (both of whom I actually quite like so I feel slightly guilty by calling them...) as mediocre strikers with some redeeming qualities, capable of going on scoring sprees but in no way worth £12m. I know I'm a Shola fanboy but even looking at it objectively I'd say he is at best equal to Ameobi during his broken hip spell. Would I pay £12m for Shola Ameobi? Well yes I would but that's because he's a once in a lifetime character. I have yet to see Fletcher appear in an amusingly endearing newspaper article so as far as I care he is a bit of a stuffy git.

Aiden McGeady - A player who commanded a £9.5m transfer fee for impressing in the Scottish League, a feat more or less shared by Craig Gordon (who to be fair has been ravaged by injury) however whenever his name pops up in the gossip columns it's always figures of at least £6m mooted. A player who in all honesty pales in comparison to the likes of Guthrie and Pennant nevermind your Giggsies and Gazzas somehow is still considered a hot prospect for trundling on in the KKK Russian league at a canter. That he is Ireland second-highest capped active player is of great concern as for every spark of brilliance (which happens even in the non-league), there is a hundred hours of lazily jogging along the sideline and losing the ball to any opposition player who asks politely.

Matty Pattison - I seriously don't get what some people see in him, a few appearances for us, gains a badboy rep at Norwich then just about scrapes by in the South African league. The way some people on here go on about him you'd think he was ****ing Messi! Very average player who can't even break into the Bafana Bafana, aged 25 and with 7 career goals to his name I think we can finally put the 'wonderkid' tag to bed now. ffs

Nobody expects you to heap praise on Scholes being a scouser pal, but no matter how many times you say it, no matter how you word it, Scholes has been littered with medals as a result of him controlling games for over 15 years, we can't thank Ronaldo for all of them.

Six seconds into this video you'll see him take out the entire Manchester City midfield with one pass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPwsVDlWbN8

I agree Rooney is over rated.

I mean 35 goals last season isn't enough. 2 less than Van Persie playing 4 games less, 5 more goals than the untouchable Aguero.

Lol. Touchy. I don't mean he's not an amazing player, I just don't think he's world class like a lot of people make him out to be.

Ha sorry pal, didn't mean to come across as arrogant or anything! What is world class then?

Would you say Aguero? Because Rooney had a better season than he did on a personal level and has a better scoring record over his entire career, that's how strikers are judged given they've both played at the highest level (with La Liga's defending overall being questionable - Forlan's record springs to mind).

There's hardly anything in it between them but I'd certainly consider Aguero as world class. People look at Rooney and think "fat scouser", but in truth he's got near enough everything a striker should have.

Tough one. I like Rooney but you have to face up to facts and he has been a failure at the last two major tournaments for England. Both times he was unfit but he still bottled both for me and his no show was not solely down to fitness or us not being that good. Part of it was his struggle to cope with pressure.

But in terms of league form and most of his qualification form for England, he rarely disappoints.

I've not seen much of Aguero, but not many players do THAT well in their first season in the premiership.

I think British players are overrated and over valued in general tbh. Rooney is a great advert for the prem, hes a passionate, aggressive player.

Put it this way, would he get in your world 11, or world 22 for that matter?

I wouldn't have Rooney in a world 11 no, not a chance, because in my opinion Ronaldo and Messi are the two greatest goalscorers in the history of the game (I'm a firm believer that football has evolved), so those two players would be my two strikers in a 4-4-2 formation.

I would say Rooney would be good enough for a world squad of 22, but he'd never get in it unless Fergie picked the team (which if it ever happens he should by the way!). He'd bring an extra dimension to the side and I think even with all the talent at Real Madrid, Ronaldo would say Rooney is probably the best strike partner he's ever had alongside him.

As for Rooney not performing for England, the same can be said for Messi for Argentina, especially given that the Argentina squad is much healthier in the strike department than England's squad is. In my opinion, the last player who performed equally as well for club and country was Ronaldinho, sometimes you just don't get the chemistry to cross over between the players in club/country - which is why Spain do so well as most of them come from just a couple of teams in Spain and play together regularly.

Rooney isn't as good as Messi or Ronaldo, he never will be but he deserves every superlative thrown at him - it's not just him who's consistently failed for England, the squad is littered with Champions league winners and Premier League winners who barely ever perform, Joe Hart and Ashley Cole aside.

The only thing with the Messi/Argentina comparison I'd say is slightly different is that Argentina for some reason have refused to base their tactics around getting the best out of Messi like Barca. We on the other hand have based our team around Rooney, certainly under Capello when he was at his peak in terms of England performances. He has done it all through qualification then looked like a rabbit in the headlights at the big event.

Messi, for whatever the Argies reasons are, is often left isolated. Some of that was more to do with Maradonas madness of course when he was in charge. Unless you buy into the conspiracy he was not keen on Messi eclipsing his achievements. But he is not the only manager who for some reason has refused to put Messi central to his tactical plans. I understand that the team must always come first but when you have the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, and to a lesser extent Rooney, you have to make sure you get everything out of them.

Pele - 758 games, 697 goals (club and country)
Puskas - 705 games, 700 goals (club and country)

Messi - 284 games, 195 goals (full club and country, not counted 'B' games)
C Ronaldo - 417 games, 234 goals (clubs and full country)

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Quite possibly they are the best players of all time, but certainly not the best goalscorers.

Cue the discussion on how it is harder to score goals now (it is to be fair)......................

I don't care, anyone who can score 700 goals in 705 games is clearly a better goalscorer.

Not really if it is more of a challenge to score goals. Its like saying Jordan Rhodes is a better goalscorer than Van Persie last year. He wouldn't be because RVP would likely have scored more than him at that level. Its tougher now because of one single factor - fitness.
