The lead singer of 80's band Modern Romance - Mick Mullins - once cooked dinner for me at his flat in London (he's my wife's brother-in-law). I have to say that he was a better singer than he was chef...
Oh disappointments..... My biggest t was sleeping through Hendrix's last gig a IOW a few days before he died......
Claim to fame - a couple of curries with Rick Wakeman ( never liked his music though ) in Bradford ... my mate was his business manager on tour
What I find interesting are the personalities of the 'stars'. Some are lovely people and not at all like their stage images. Others are so up themselves. Suzi Quatro was objectionable yet the Clash were the loveliest people you could meet. Richard Thompson was intense yet his wife was motherly, full of concern for we youngsters. I suppose this shouldn't be surprising. The same is true of other famous or 'important' people I have met. As for Hendrix, Yorkie, in the late 70s I was providing grunt labour for a band which included Mitch Mitchell. His drum kit cases were plastered with 'Jimi Hendrix Experience' logos. I was in awe of the kit but he was so unpleasant that you couldn't help thinking that he had been carried by Hendrix and would never rise again.
Bhunu Boys - great stuff. Also 4 Brothers & Kanda Bongo Man if you are into Congolese Rhumba! I saw 2 of the 4 Edmonton Who concerts, one was awful, Pete was pi$$ed off that night. The other concert was brilliant, just luck I guess.
Kanda Bongo Man was great. I don't know the 4 brothers. I've can't remember which African bands I've seen and which I just have the music. I think I saw jonah moyo & devera ngwena. There was a venue in Camden that had African music every week on a particular mid-week night. I used to go there without even finding out who was on - until I arrived to see the farewell gig of the Monochrome Set. The African nights had finished.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band was the first concert I went to, at Watford Palace Theatre, early to mid 70's. Followed by Man, and then ELO at Watford Town Hall. The ELO concert was ruined by Marc Bolan turning up and it turning into a screaming session rather than a concert! Have seen some great performances over the years. Meatloaf at Wembley stands out, and Pink Floyd performing the Wall. Have to say I was also really impressed with Paulo Nutini approx 5 years ago.
King Sunny Ade was good. I heard some very good bands from South and West Africa on a couple of work trips to Johannesburg and Capetown. They performed in shebeens(?) where gin was served in tin mugs. This may account for why I can't remember any of their names!
Just got tickets to take Mme to see Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam.... I last saw him in 1971... The only folk or rock performer of any ilk Mme will go to these days... so looking forward to a good trip up to Newcastle....
