I personally know 2 blokes who became millionaires off the back of the carve up mate. One had the sense to get out of the industry and buy a vineyard in France, the other stuck at it and lost the lot again.....
While there ae wastages and inefficiencies in nationalised industries, they are more efficient than when they are privatised. Leyland was well known all over the world. Like Jagua and Royce Rolls foreinners love to buy them. Royce Rolls engine used to be the best engine for aircraft before, I am not sure of now...and made in Britain. My dad bought a Rodge bicycle in 1950..and he gave to me in 1964, still very strong.
rolly royce trent engine is a completely different business to rolls royce cars. the cars are a fashion thin. sometimes that sort of stuff is in sometimes its not in. its really what do celebs and rich want to be seen in... and that market is bloated as F with options.
I don't disagree with much of that. I only questioned whether the British car manufacturing industry really deserved to be subsidised by the government/taxpayer. I look back to the companies that were given a 1st, 2nd, 3rd chance right up to the last decade in fact and they still folded. I fcking despise Thatcher but companies like Daimler, Jenson, MG, Reliant, Rover have all gone recently, nothing to do with that fcking witch. They seem to prove the failure of British car manufacturing is a combination of being a victim of circumstances beyond their control AND the inability to adapt with the times.
My first car was a honda civic (the first models) rust bucket. Swindled by a dealer posing as a private seller.
First car 'x reg' Ford Escort XR3 white with full body kit, cost £1800 in 1987 Double somersaulted it into a field, wonder why insurance for 21 year old drivers went up, days of the teenage hot hatch. Was only third party so bought back off insurance company and stripped and sold for spares, got money back and bought an XR3i Drove this like i stole it for 6 months and big ends started knocking, filled with thick oil and sold it rather guiltily to man with one arm for price i paid for it! Saw it a couple of months later, recognized by trail of blue exhaust smoke

I got a cracking deal on it too. I bought it in 2006 on 4,500 miles on a 98 plate! One old lady owner who died - I bought it for £1500 Once got head whilst driving at the same time so it has many happy memories
