Jimmy Hill: " Well, come on Terry, don't sit on the fence, tell us what you think England's chances are?" Terry Venables: " I think they're 50/50"
I prefer the Roche one by a mile. Iconic for me. It's better with the slightly longer build up though imo.
One time on Football Italia somebody ran onto the pitch with a couple of police chasing after him, so the commentators decided to commentate on that instead. I nearly fell off the sofa when one of them remarked "Great tackle!" when they bundled the bloke to the ground.
"Really? No mention of this?" And thus "Don pericolo" was born. There will never be a better display of the emotions of the "armchair" football supporter than this one.
"This is posted a lot, but cracks me up every time" The Goons STILL play with a team full of Wilf Finneys.
The most spectacular example I can think of offhand of an athlete rising to a big occasion. The best thing about this was that everyone watched hoping a dumb animal could come through with a big performance. But then he did exactly that, clearly feeding on the crowd's energy, not only winning and breaking the track record, but setting the record for the fastest 1 1/2 miles and the fastest mile in the same race. As he makes the final turn, perspective reveals he's furlongs ahead of the other horses, and the crowd noise crescendoes, it gives me chills. He knew they were cheering for him. And the people cheering were truly thrilled to see greatness, whatever form it happened to be in.
