And times change...and rapidly. There was the idea then (possibly true for some victims) that going to court would add to their stress. Moving the problem on was seen as the way to go....obviously totally wrong for possible future victims.
Ex Chelsea player claims he was given £50,000 to keep quite....... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38179882
As someone who gave up a lot of time for youth activities when I was younger, I wholly agree. The only thing I would add, is that the line that "everyone knew" is not true in my experience. Sadly the victims feel they cannot speak out, for a whole host of reasons. I may have harboured suspicions of some of my fellow volunteers, but no-one is going to accuse anyone without an inkling of evidence. I still volunteer at the local primary school that was attended by my grandchildren. I am very pleased that the screening process is so vigorous, and that I am never put in a situation where any allegation could be made. Hopefully the procedures weed out many. The problem is we are dealing with clever manipulative people. One of the reasons I hate these bastards, other than the obvious, is that I see my grandchildren being taught to trust no-one. Just such a sad state of affairs.
It is sad that people are becoming very careful about how they deal with youngsters now. I remember crying on my second day at infant school and the teacher sat me on her knee....she wouldn't dare do that now. Sad for teachers, but also sad for the child who just wants a hug.
If it's the same person I've had mentioned to me then yes, he's still alive. And these accusations all came out in the public domain before.
I feel it is a good thing. Yes it is harder for people that generally care. But it also protects the child more. Biggest problem is how abuse victims are seen by many. The stuff we get thrown at us is disgusting. We are tarred by many as weak at allowing what happened to us go on and not doing anything about it. Society as a whole is the reason why most abuse victims don't speak up, not the stress of court.
To be fair Beef I wouldn't say it's many that think like that. It's only a minority, though a vocal one all the same.
It's more then enough, when you think a minority of people in the UK could be 2million, it says something. It's why I didn't speak up until I was far older and my abuser was dead. It's why only now I have admitted I was abused on this board. Even though I was worried some would take the piss etc (atm none have thankfully).
Saints have released a statement saying they have been in contact with Hampshire police and will cooperate in every way. https://southamptonfc.com/news/2016-12-02/club-statement
I would like to think that I am in the majority in saying that you, and those that have spoken out, are incredibly brave, I can't begin to imagine how difficult it must be to talk about. Hopefully others will be encouraged to come forward, including some who are suffering abuse at the moment. So for that reason... Sir, I salute you!
Oh yeah mate even 1 is more than enough. Just saying idiots voices are generally louder espescially with social media which is partly why I don't use it. Don't think you've got anything to worry bout regarding piss taking etc. on here either pal... very brave of you to mention it too and got my full respect for that
What do people make of this? http://metro.co.uk/2016/11/20/newca...mmy-savile-chants-live-on-sky-sports-6270756/
I'll make all the jokes under the sun. Some jokes are risqué such as racial jokes etc, but even then, playing on stereotypes can have comedic value. Taking the piss out of the fact a child has been abused however can never have comedic value. I don't think (certainly hope not anyway) any members of this board would find humour in what has happened to yourself and so many others.
Yes, read it earlier. Includes a video where you can clearly hear the Newcastle supporters chanting the words. It's appalling, and one of the reasons why football fans tend not to be my favourite category of people. Fine in isolation, but capable of awful behaviour within the protection of a group.
Yes he is. Since one of the two players who came out this week was mentioned, then I know who it is. It is the former coach I referred to right at the start of this thread. I won't be naming him but I am sure it won't be long before he is named. One of those players went public before about him and he was named then.
