Or to put it another way, if Shearer was dropped and died no one would know the difference. <ok>

No. Success is measured in whatever the player wants to measure it in. Who the hell cares what anyone else thinks?

Whether he won bits of metal on string or not, he was one of the most prolific England goalscorers in modern times, he did wonders for the England national team, and he become the highest ever goalscorer for his boyhood club, which he was extremely loyal to and still is.

Ask him, and I bet he'd say that he considers his career pretty bloody successful and he's very proud of himself.

Or, would you consider someone like Michael Owen more successful with a career to be more proud of? The man who only managed to get winners medals by sitting on the bench for Man Utd and being a ****ty overpaid sponge.

Can't believe you mackems have been saying you'd save Bent, shows some of the delusion that there is in Sunderland. Here's bent, one of the most obnoxious individuals around, locked himself in his room and wouldn't come out till you agreed to let him feck off for more money.
Then Shearer, one incident aside, who is not greedy nor obnoxious, and has been a great role model for many, many young people.
Some of you lot sicken me.

Why are you questioning his judgement? He became a legend and the highest ever goalscorer for the club he loves. He played in the Champions League with them and played in England through a number of World Cup and Euro tournaments. If HE is proud of that and believes he's had a good career which he's enjoyed, then you can't really argue against that.

And I guarantee that he didn't think 'IF ONLY'. Perhaps he wasn't one of those modern-day footballers who just want medals by any means possible, and actually took great pride in taking his boyhood club to the Champions League as a toon legend? People value different things, but it seems that players like Shearer are becoming less and less frequent

I'm listening to you, but what you're saying is utterly meaningless.

Maybe he had everything he wanted, and maybe he wouldn't consider medals 'more'. Maybe he didn't want to go to Man Utd, and took much more pride in playing for his boyhood club?

If YOU think that career pride and success is based on medals and winning things, then it doesn't mean **** I'm afraid. If Shearer based the success of his career on different things, then he's happy, and he didn't deserve 'more', because he had what he wanted. You can't really argue with that if Shearer simply didn't care about changing teams to win something.

Actually, it's fans like you who are part of the problem. We, as football fans, are crying out for modern players who love the sport, have some loyalty and take their success out of playing for their team, yet you're deriding Shearer and saying he had a '**** career' because he had those attributes and didn't just hop from team to team to try and win some medals. Make your mind up.

    blah blah ****ing blah,

i'll state for the last time, sheera was a good player, a helluve player,

but facts are facts, he went home to lead the cartoon army to greatness, it didn't happen,

he had a good career, that would have been capped of by leading his beloved team to actually win something.

but he had more ambition than the club could give, so it was the club that held him back, and not the other way round...

bored of sheera talk now, good player, end off

If you're just completely making things up out of thin air when you don't have a clue about the facts whatsoever then I suppose it's pointless discussing it any further.

Now I'm off to the pub.

I'd save ****ing Gaddafi over Shearer.:emoticon-0112-wonde

He made the ultimate sinful choice to play for the dark side and thus, in this imaginary scenario, condemned himself to death.

Bent is a greedy, self centred, ungrateful bastard in my eyes but he did score a **** load of goals for us.
