The going rate is not set 5 years ago.

the going rate is the going rate end of... thats what the rest of top 4 are paying.

top players are on 200k+ we are nowhere near that. if you are paying half max to our best players we are stuffed.

The trouble is, given your situation, you will have to pay over the odds for a season or two until you get back into the top 4.

Fully agree. The likes of Man City and PSG have destroyed player valuation and handed all of the power to the players.

Kenwright never sold a single player from under the feet of Moyes, not one.

Maybe, maybe not. Some of our best current players were among our cheapest (e.g. Sterling, Ibe, Sturridge, Coutinho, Can), while players like Lovren, Lallana, Balotelli and Markovic have been disappointing.

It also depends on the manager being able to get the best out of the players. There's no doubt that the squad was capable of getting top 4 (and would have been in with a decent chance of it if we hadn't gone on holiday two months before the season ended).

The manager controls who stays and who goes.

That's how it works and that's how it should always work.

The Chairman provides the funds and negotiates the best deal he can for the club, but the decisions are made by the manager at EFC.

The only players who left during Moyes reign (that he didn't want rid of himself) wanted to leave - Rooney, Lescott and Arteta being the highest profile.

Same under Martinez, with Screech being the only big name to move on so far.

Kenwright has never sold a player from under his managers feet.

well add real madrid and barca to that yes... UTd too.. 300k per week for average fat players... they are all setting the going rate and it trickles down. the tv moeny is inflating the average wage.

my last sight of the average was 43k ... considering that includes kids and newly promoted clubs it is nuts and it will ony grow with new tv deal.

100k is not big moeny now. it was in 2011 for us when we needed to "trim" wages... now it is what every club can pay. LFC need to think hey 180k per week for saurez was actually not half bad even if we only paid it for 6 months.

150k is the starting rate for a top player now IMO. if we are not offering it players will go where it is offered

He has about 4 years remaining on his extended deal so even if he wanted to go, Martinez would hold all the trump cards. Look at how he held onto Fellaini until the last moments and rejected the bids from united for Baines<ok>

He was even astute enough to have McCarthy lined up and waiting outside finch farm as the replacement for Fellaini<laugh> United thought Bill Kenwright would fold and sell Fellaini cheaper than his buyout clause......how wrong they were

That sounds liek a terrible excuse. Like saying if only Everton had our post xmas form all season. Clearly neither side were good enough to replecate the previous seasons performance

Looking back he should have taken the £16m on the table for Baines.

As he's blocked the path for the best young LB in the division, who's now ****ing off on a free.

So it cost us twice that shout.

    Hindsight I suppose.

They were forced into that because of the interest from Man City, but credit, they did at least realise that they had to give into Rooney's demands if they deemed him that important otherwise he'd have gone to MC.
That said, I agree with the clubs stance over Sterling. I'd make him rot in the reserves for the rest of his contract.

Obivously not replicating last season's performance, but in the end we finished 8 points behind Man U, and lost games to Crystal Palace, Hull, and Stoke, and drew with West Brom, all of which we were capable of beating. We were also capable of beating Man Utd (but not on the day). I'm not saying that we deserved to finish fourth by any means - we were awful - or that we don't have some way to go to match the best teams - we clearly do. But based on the current standard of the league, I think the squad was capable of top four. And one of the reasons Rodgers is getting so much flak is because the squad did not live up to its capabilities.

I would expect Man U to be better next season though, so it might not be the case that it's capable next season.

Like I said, Bill is not as silly or sly as people make out him to be. He and Martinez got a cracking deal on Fellaini<ok>

I dunno, 28 million for Man U's second most important player sounds a bit cheap to me.

Is Garbutt leaving, is he really the best young English LB? He should have really forced his way in over Baines but hardly set the world alight in the games he got. People talk about his corners but some were terrible. I can't remember the night game where he put three out of play at the PE
