piss-poor but not remotely surprising after that '86th minute' on Sat that basically torpedoed our season.
I will miss next Saturday's home match against Wycombe, as away in Bath. Can't say I'm bothered to be perfectly honest.
You mean it prevented any chance of getting to the autos, places that have not been occupied by Pompey since the autumn so automatic promotion was never merited. However, there are the play-offs and all that is needed are 4 points from 4 games. And as Pompey are likely to finish in the bottom play-off position, sit back and enjoy a wonderful experience as the expectations are likely to be greater on Pompey's opponents having finished higher.
well when you put it like that it doesn't sound so bad but right now I'm concerned we won't even finish in the play-offs.
I cannot believe it Wooperts or is it a defence mechanism kicking in? John Westwood must be tearing his hair out in frustration. Like you I won't lose any sleep if things go belly up!!
Just a thought!! To my mind there is a whole sense of decades of failure and total underachievement at Fratton Park. Would Pompey be better off tearing down the entire place and rebuilding on the site, temporarily relocating to West Leigh Park and playing in an environment that might be League 2 standard? (I say this half tongue in cheek)
can any one tell me what has happened to Foulton, he went off on international duty, didnt feature and has not been used since, did we send him back to Liverpool or is he still with us? Jones in goal just dooms disaster for me, yo watch the defence and they are all over the place, even Burgess looks lost, yet with young Ryan in goal they looked unbeatable at the back, even when we did concede the players just got on with it...... ironic that with Jones in goal we have gone back to long ball hoofing, loosing possession and getting battered........with little to no idea or confidence!!!!!!!!!! I see in the news today that PC says he will take the blame rather than balls out the players........personally, I think they should all be held accountable, they are paid professionals (apparently) the gaffer picked a team, in my book the wrong one and players didnt perform, yet again they turned up expecting to dominate and got humbled by a team that have not been able to buy a win! People have been talking about auto promotion, based on some of our results of late we are not ready for the play off's either!
I feel in light of recent results we need a new chant: E-I-E-I-E-I-O, down the football league we go. When we miss promotion, this is what we'll sing, we are Pompey, we are Pompey losing is our thing!
I have to say that I think you guys have your feet firmly on the ground and there is none of the billy big bollox stuff I've read on other boards. But, the thing is everyone else expects even if you don't. I think it really is a case of "it's Portsmouth and they will p**s this league " for loads of people. Not just an expectation from plenty of Pompey supporters but most other clubs as well. You have started favourites for promotion each season. That puts a lot of pressure on the club and to be honest I'm not sure your players are equipped to live up to it. Or whoever the Manager is at the time. Should be is no guarantee of actually achieving and never has been. League 2 is the pits but it's so hard to get out of. You have seen time and time again that on given days anyone, even the supposed lowest of the lowly, can beat anyone else. Almost at will players raise their game and the very next match revert to type once more. I remember our team from our last time in this league who got promoted with record points. There wasn't one single star in the side. All of them were ordinary run of the mill players talent wise. But, we got the right manager at the right time who assembled the right players at the right time and it clicked. They were mates on the pitch and often seen out together as mates off it. It's what you need in this league. I think you have too many players for a start. They are probably paid more than most in this league, I'm guessing that of course, and are just too comfortable. You can't sack players though mores the pity. You still have more chance than most to get out of here. You will do it sooner rather than later and it could still be this term. It does pee you off watching it though doesn't it.
fair points greeny.....I'm just surprised with what we have at our disposal that we've not pushed close....don't get me wrong I never thought for a second we'd win the league...but I did fancy us for top 3 and certainly safely in the playoffs...but I'm not sure we deserve it....too many drawn games. Last night might be the slap in the face they needed....its time to focus now on ruthless defending and ruthless finishing, we can do it....we just need to do it more than 1 in 3 or 4 games.
It's what I mean about so called stars. I have seen so many players in this league that you think instantly why are they here. They come out and perform in a match and are untouchable. The class that is there is undeniable but they come out in the next and are total pants. You can have a shed load of players like that who on paper should wipe the floor with any other side put in front of them. But, they don't do it and throw away leads time and time again. Then you have to ask yourself why they are playing in this league at all. The answer is all of the above because their heads aren't on the right way round and they waste the talent they have. Managers at a better level have seen this and hence they fall to the bottom. Thats why you don't need stars but people who put in a shift week in week out. They will lose games but not from the lack of trying and then one day the 11 click and off they go. Your players are far too comfortable and some probably fit into the head on wrong category. I would guess there are those sorts of people in all walks of life who waste what they have. Trouble is we love the football thing and would give anything to be able to do what some of them can do. Thats why we can't understand the failure bit because we would almost die for the cause if given the chance. They on the other hand just pop out for a Nandos after the match as if nothing had happened.
