Football needs to be cleaned up, and that means stamping out behaviour and language like this. Too many f**kwits are football fans, and unfortunately they spoil it for the rest. Start introducing heavy, heavy fines for any pejorative language used in chants whatsoever.
It's like a word treadmill. Start with the N-word, then go to Negro, then to black, then to African American. What next?.. "Person of darker complexion"? Like afcftw said, it's the intent behind the word that matters. Politically correct moralizers who want to condemn people to make themselves look good should get the punch in the face they deserve.
Thankfully i've never encountered much racism but i know of plenty of the older lot who did. I agree banning words are silly and forcing people to think a certain way is also wrong, which is common place nowadays. Taking the time to understand everyones different religions and cultures is a step in the right direction!
It is, but it's such a difficult issue to manage if you're going to start handing out prosecutions for football fans. As mentioned, there are probably more Jews at Emirates supporting Arsenal on a saturday than there are spurs fans at WHL. In that scenario, do Arsenal supporting Jews have the right to chant 'Yid' over and above non jewish Spurs fans ? I just think it's too difficult to manage - you either have everybody or nobody allowed to use the word in football stadiums.
