I don't think either Defoe or Kane are up to leading the line in the Prem as sole strikers. There might be a case for playing both of them, but that would mean someone like Siggy losing out? PS - I've just worked out how to use the rep setting, so have given out various likes belatedly that I promised. If I couldn't find the exact post, I just added 'a like' somewhere, eg for Sidney Fiddler, as I really like his posts in general.
I like Kane and he looks a good prospect, but I liked Sheringham too and I wouldn't have wanted to see him playing on his own up front. He'll work hard and he did a good job in the second half of our game against the NY Red Bulls in the pre-season, but he'll struggle in the Prem in that role.
Seeing that United have just agreed to sign Van Persie, it's fair to assume he and Rooney will get the lions share of appearances up top for United this season, meaning one or two names may be surplus to requirements. Considering our desperate situation and frankly, it is desperate... I wonder if a late bid to bring Berba back might be wiser than dealing with a cash hungry Adebayor who will only resort to his walking pace once he gets comfortable. Berba for me is better quality and has a point to prove; past or no past. We need to move on. I would even consider a loan deal for Federico Macheda or Danny Wellbeck... even Hernandez if things don't pick up soon as our options look dire right now. Thoughts?
Vertonghen scored for Belgium tonight so who needs strikers. Unfortunately VdV did not score for the Dutch who lost 4-2
I agree with you flasper if Berbatov becomes available we should bring him back. I know he left in bad circumstances but he is class and could play that line striker role as good as Adebayor. Plus we are bloody desperate. At least we have Jermain Defoe super sub then!
I also agree with Welbeck or Chicharito but not Macheda he is still living off his goal against Villa 2 seasons ago.
Utd aren't going to sell Wellbeck, he is a class act for them and one of Fergies young stars, plus they need four strikers for all the games they play in the league and champions league.
i didnt see the game but from the subs made, he was only striker on the pitch when he scored so unless hogdson done something radical then he scored as a lone striker! problem solved
Apparently, Hodgson switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is a formation that I have suggested we could use. We have the players for it:- -------------Goalkeeper-------------- Walker----Dawson----Vertonghen----Benny ----------THudd/Parker------Sandro------- -----VDV-------Sigurdsson-----Bale-------- -----------------Defoe------------------ That system has fluidity. Switching to a more traditional 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 can easily be achieved by bringing on Lennon, and taking off one of our DMs.
i hope i got some bloody likes..i know i wont get any from Lenny! and im quite excited in way about how we will handle this striker problem...i can see it being one of them spanish formations...with Defoe at the top...Bale and Lennon pushing further on...Sandro Livermore sitting and sig firing from the centre and upwards...with Walker and Bale given licence to run up further to accomodate the starting points of Bale and Lennon. ohh and i hope AVB gives Gio a chance..thers a brilliant player in there somehow and i dont believe redknapp's ways of communicating will have encoureged that player to shine.
Likes? Nah - I don't do any of all that. I don't even have this set up to see people's signatures or avatars or whatever. I'm just about the words, me - can't be doing with any of that other stuff. So don't take it personally. If I like something someone says I might even go to the trouble of typing out the word "like" and inserting it into a sentence. Might not, though. Probably won't be arsed.
HI Spurlock, I'll give you a like I promise. But I really can't for this post, I'm not excited at all by JD up front, it's embarrassing AFAIC to have him there on his own. Also it means we can't realistically play Lennon, because having two 'little uns' in a front 3 in the Prem will see us get squashed physically, and you have to fear for us again at set pieces - defending and attacking. It's an utter shambles. However I promise that when I remember, first post I see I can give some rep to your good self I will
I know what you're saying here GH10. one thing we're good at is passing, especially in the middle 3rd. the issue we're going to have is in the final 3rd when we need goals. we're going to be very limited in our attacking options during the game, and could end up in a position where we're trying to walk it into goal. As you say, Lennon and Defoe do not give us any height, which the opposition will realise, and therefore be able to adjust their game so they are marking our "dangerous" players with 2 of their men. Bale will be man marked and there will be cover on him from another player. Lennon is likely to get similar treatment. Now, I know some might say "but that free's up 2 of our other men if bale and Lennon are being marked by 2 men each", but even so, the men who are unmarked aren't unmarked for long, and are usually in positions where they pose no threat. As a result, our attack starts again. almost like stalemate, and we pass it from one side of the box to the other. Without an aerial threat, we cannot mix up our play during the game. if our passing and pace tactic isn't working, we're nakered. we'll be sussed out too easily, with no answer to it. And we all know how difficult is it to walk the ball into the goal these days...
Cheers Roo, great analysis. Of course we may both be wrong, but I honestly can't believe that a 'front three' of Lennon JD Bale is what AVB was hoping for when he signed up. Even if we go 4-2-3-1, we then add VDV, who is far from big in Prem terms, there's not enough height and strength there in the 'front 4'. Siggy in for Lennon helps, but it's still not convincing to me. Anyway good luck to the team on Saturday and AVB in particular, let's see if he can make bricks from straw.
in a nutshell GH10, we don't have anyone in the attacking sense, who's big, strong and ugly. all our players are flair/creative types, which is great for the spurs way of football, but it's not going to do the business against so many different types of teams. the only saving grace, is that Newcastle are also a footballing side, and this could work in our favour.
...and they may well be missing their first choice central midfield and arguably their 2 best players
Skunks, Makems, manure, Chitty, Chavski ...IMHO spuds is slot better than some and by drawing attention to it I reckon more people will use it!
who's out spurfect? Tiote was the only one (possibly) I heard. I'll be waiting till the evening, could all be tactical.
