Frankly if Wyke gets us promoted then he can go where he wants with my well-wishes. If that's a move to his boyhood club that he probably gave up on a chance of playing for again, so be it. He'll have done his service to our club and will be remembered as a hero. Not bad for somebody who flopped the first 2 years. The club is bigger than Wyke. And Sunderland in the Championship can do better than him. That's not to say I want him to go. I'd be very happy if we got promoted and he signed a new contract.
Think most (me included) would have sold him in January if it meant replacing him with somebody who looked more promising. His turnaround this season, and especially the last few months, has been astonishing. Very pleased for him.
True but if i was a Sunderland fan playing for Boro i would wanna move heaven and earth to play for the club i supported. Lets hope he is not as bothered
Think we all say that as fans. I’m totally with you. Suppose it all whether he’s interested n sentiment or football reasons. Suppose we’ll find out in coming months!
Not me he was third top scorer in January and I argued this point on here with a number of people. Some even said “I’ll get the car warmed up” when he was linked with a move!!
That's fair enough. I (obviously) can't speak for everyone but I think if most of us were honest we saw his run as good form that he would likely not sustain, certainly not this long.
I know mate. There were very few on board with me. Start of the season I’d have driven him to Plymouth if they’d wanted to buy. Given him a craggy even!!!!
You'd think he would want to stay if we go up. We have a good team spirit hopefully this cup is just a really green bright bud that has formed. Promotion let it flower and grow into something special. From the ground up rising again!
Probably in the minority here and it was slightly different circumstances because he was at our academy, but this is the same reason I wasn't overly bothered when Colback went to Newcastle. Boyhood club etc etc. Wyke is a Boro fan so naturally he'd probably want to go there. Depends on his goals. No disrespect, but Boro are plodders in the Championship, where as here we are on the cusp of something potentially very special here. Depends what he wants to be a part of. Either way, if he stays good, if wants to go, goodluck. We shall see.
I don't believe footballers in most part aren't fans in the way we imagine. Their family might support a team and they might have worn the shirt but reality is they were always focused on playing and didn't spend their weekends watching football listening to it on the radio etc but playing. Not saying they don't have a bit of sentiment to their club but where we would for the most part turn down moves or leave most clubs to play for Sunderland I think it's different for them. He would be daft to go as it seems to be a case of the right manager, right tactics etc.. for him at Boro. He could go there and struggle and I believe he is a confidence player and doesn't enjoy himself if he is a bit off. I always got the feeling he cared about his form and wanted to do well wasn't happy as long as he was getting paid, anyone else think that about him?
I'm really not too bothered about who stay and who goes ...we are a 3rd tier football club with predominantly 3rd tier footballers. If we want to progress many of what we have will be replaced over a period of time, if Wyke wants to play for Boro, so be it..He will be replaced, only this time with Speakman and LJ I reckon our recruitment will be so much better than it has been.
I've said it myself, if you want to progress and have the means in any league, you loan or buy from the league above. Once in the championship, aim for fringe players from premier league clubs.
Good Post. I don't think players are that sentimental. Power was an ex-Tranmere player, and his family support them, yet he was over the moon on Sunday. Clive Mendonca would be another example.
