Can you imagine Stan coming out of the Bookies 10 mins before ko!!!!!!! That side was truly the finest side the club has ever had, not sure they really had any weak links, what one or two lacked in pace they made up for by their reading of the game. Oh BTW Danish, apologies but i am going to be a little pedantic over the numbering.......Gerry never wore the number 4 that season Hollins did, DT was 7, Don Masson was 9 & Givens 11......small but important point!!!! Great memories of a great side. At the moment the current side has potential to emulate that side, we just need to win some bloody games!!!
This is actually a very good post. Nice one Danish. I agree with those that said no-one is currently good enough to make the 76 side. I think Flyer has missed the point of this thread. Of course those players back then wouldn't physically make the present side in terms of diet, science and athleticism. Another way of looking at this thread is this......... Who in the current 25 would you say matched that of the 76 side man for man in terms of playing style and ability? If we could replicate the 76 roles, who in todays squad would fill them? Cesar is of course a Don Given.. or should that be Parkes.
Givens? He was a striker... Parkes was the best keeper we've ever had, better than Cesar (mainly due to age) and certainly better that old ponytail.
Bad luck Flyer if you weren't around to see the 76 team. If they had the same access to fitness, diet and above all cash/motivation - just compare their wage packets, even Stan may have calmed down for what our current crop are on - only Hollins would be at risk. As said earlier, only Adel, Cesar, Granero and possibly Faurlin would have competed for a place in that team, probably unsuccessfully. But I am hugely biased - my formative years were watching this team develop from 72 onwards. They will always be my favorites, even if we win the Champions League 3 years in a row. Proper footballers, playing a proper game fairly ( though Givens was fond of a theatrical fall), with humour and character. Brilliant.
Dave Thomas And Stanley would walk into any team. I would drop Adel for Stanley I am afraid. The man was a genius full stop end of story. I would drop SWP for Dave....but I would probably drop SWP for me...and I am an old, 5 practically nothing woman (cue joke.......so is he)
As a young teenager in the early 70's I had the pleasure of watching QPR on The Big match / Match of the Day with Brian Moore, here in Oz. Overall, it was this team of players that made me a die hard Rangers fan that I am today. Maybe the memories get back better each year but whatever ............... this team will always be my favourite Rangers team. OK, I'll sit back down in my wheelchair, now
