I'd like to think I would have a very low opinion of Terry no matter who I supported, but being an R makes it very easy to detest him.
We had a discussion on the Arsenal and Chelsea board about locality etc and how it affects your outlook. With all due respect I wouldn't imagine you encounter many Chelsea fans so it's hard to hate them. I've lived in Birmingham for 2 years now and I hate Villa with a passion, when previously I was apathetic about them. I suppose it's because Villa are part of my community and I live next to the ground so encounter Villa fans on a regular basis. Every one has a club you love to hate. If it's West Ham then Chelsea If it's Chelsea then Spurs If it's Spurs then Arsenal If it's Arsenal then United etc etc. I can understand why you'd hate a team if you encounter their fans often. To the United and Liverpool fans near me, the Chelsea game is the biggest game for them bar none, forget each other or City/Everton etc, same is true of Arsenal and obviously the many Fulham fans I know.
Can't really get it to be honest. I've been surrounded by Liverpool and United fans all my life yet I don't dislike their Clubs at all. Okay, Liverpool is a mid-table Club that thinks its big but how could you hate them? Celtic and Rangers I'm not impressed with but that's because of the hate-filled nature of the supporters, nothing to do with football. Why would you hate Villa? All strikes me as bit playground-ish to be honest.
Swords, the problem is that for far too many years we r's fans had to put up with the smugness of all the chelsea fans that lived and worked amongst us in Shepherds Bush, we were little old qpr, they were the mighty chelsea, no matter how poor a side they were or how good a side the r's were. So it was a huge joy when we statred beating them on a regular basis and they were eventually relegated. It is very much a local thing and it is still hard to like them although i did admire the way they got the result during the week.
That explains my hatred of Villa I have hated the way they only raise their game for us since the 2000 final yet roll over for everybody else. The stress playing that club has caused me is unbelievable. Also when Villa play at home, my road is full of Villa fans walking to the ground. Tesco almost unapproachable as are local shops etc, it's like you have to plan your entire Saturday around Villa, plus their fans are annoying as is the accent, which Watford has touched upon a few times.
Thanks for the explanation Tramore. One question though. Would everyone hate John Terry as much if he never played for Chelsea and played for say, Liverpool?
No. Terry is Chelsea captain and symbolises the club. He wouldn't get near as much bad press if he were a United player.
I think so Swords. But you should probably ask fans of any other club than QPR their views. But there is an excellent thread on the Chelsea board showing that even they have had enough of him. Are there no really bitter rivalries in Irish rugby, Gaelic football or hurling that could give you a sense of this?
Yes, because hes an utter ****. I hate him so much that Id give up going if he signed for us along with players like Diouf, King, Hughes etc. Barton is bad but that lot are on a whole different level, they are human filth.
The man has some talent to be so dis-liked!! BTW Swords how about you getting down to Enniscorthy on Sunday for the game, Inke is arranging the location and it's only an hour or so down the N11 for you
I disagree, I personally wouldn't put Terry on the same level as Barton, Diouf, King and Hughes who have committed serious criminal offences but I think it comes out of cirumstance. If Terry were not a Chelsea player I'd probably loathe him as much as most other fans do. If you'd asked a Birmingham fan about Marlon King 12 months ago they'v have probably called him scum etc. Football is a fickle sport, don't forget that 2 years ago Torres had almost god-like status amongst Liverpool fans yet now he is a figure of hate. Spurs fans abused Adebayor excessively and called him money grabbing etc and now the roles are reversed. I'd stick a wager on the fact when Barton was linked to QPR some fans said they wouldn't stop going or stop supporting them but in the end I believe the love for a club outweighs any hatred for an individual player. Google Winston Bogarde, that's when your patience as a fan wears thin.
It really is the worst of all accents. You must be not a million miles from my student place, DL, which is probably the one bit of the Midlands not full of that awful drone. I have to say Birmingham fans are far scummier than Villa from my experience.
Going a little off tobic the Simon Barker quoted in the article is the one that used to play for us right? Didn't he score at Stamford Bridge last time we played there in the PL? I would settle for 1-1 on Sunday with 3 points following week against Stoke...
Theres a difference between leaving to join a rival and being complete scum. Weve signed Chelsea players and vice versa. eg Clive Wilson who was loved by us, Ray Wilkins as a player too. QPR fans understand why players leave too, Sir Les was still adored after the left. Terry is as bad as Diouf. I dont see how that can be disputed. Terry is a serial liar whos whole family are scum. My principles override my support, I would never support a wife beater or killer. In fact the Philadelphia Flyers signed a rapist and all fans were hoping the other team would injure him.
GAA is amature so there's none of that. Munster have a chip with regard Leinster but its not reciprocated. Rivalry good. Bitterness bad.
Easily. I can't stand the accent. But to be fair being a Londoner here is the equivolent to celeb status. Birmingham is far more working class than Villa from my experience. But I hate Villa far more, there is a certain smugness and arrogance about Villa despite having achieved very little over the last 30 years. Nothing would make me happier than to see Villa go down, the club needs a reality check and their treatment of Newcastle fans was a disgrace when they went down, contrast that to City fans who showed a touch of class at Wolves, same with Chelsea when Bolton went down in 1998. Villa fans are the most unsporting odious creatures I have ever come across.
Adebayor didn't just leave for a rival, he publically flirted with the idea of joining other clubs, he headbutted Bendtner on the field and also stamped on Van Persie leaving him scarred.
Careful DL, you are sounding completely intolerant now. Why do you go to Uni there if you can't stand the accent or the people? If you really think being a Londoner makes you a celebrity there, you have as many problems as Flyer. All this 'hate' 'detest' 'odious' stuff is getting tedious. Save it for things that really deserve the energy that genuine hate requires.
No, I didn't mean it like that. What I meant is at my uni very few people come from London and it's uncommon to find people from down South, especially amongst my group of friends and peers etc. Generally people are local from around Birmingham, Staffordshire, Derby, Leicester and other parts of the Midlands, even coming across a Manc or Scouser is just as rare. In contrast for my best mates who are at Southampton, most people are from London or around there and it would be uncommon to find somebody from the Midlands or up North etc. It's just an exaggeration, I don't like the accent but I've met some good friends with strong Brummie accents and always have the banter
