And we were very poor, brought back down to earth with a huge bump. We simply don't have the quality players that we had a couple of decades ago.
Scotland struggling. Hardly surprising as Morocco are rated 6th in the world, semi-finalists last time, co-hosts next time. Not out of it yet, but very much second best thus far.
Maybe could have had a penalty but no shots on target either from Scotland despite an improved second half - not hard though.

Definitely would have had more than a cursory glance by VAR had it been in favour of more salubrious opposition. Falls into that "we've seen them given" category though I agree with Roy Keane's assessment rather than Duncan Ferguson's...
Or in other words, the way the decisions went yesterday I reckon the USA would've been awarded it. Didn't think the Socceroos showed much other than their shortcomings but it seemed as if the officials were happy to give the hosts the benefit of the doubt.
You have to wonder about VAR and the lack of consistency in the way it's used. There's been a lot of angst on social media about the USA v Australia game - over whether or not the second goal was offside (imo it wasn't). I'm not sure that VAR reviewed it, there being such a short period of time between it being scored and the game restarting, but if it was reviewed, the ref didn't publicly announce how the decision was arrived at - which refs in other matches have done.
I'm no fan of VAR, but if it must be used, then use the damn thing properly and fairly.

The scorer was onside, his two teammates next to him were off. All three were in play. My understanding is that the letter of the law was followed. I don't think the spirit was.
Good call by, I think, VAR? It's precisely how the law should be applied.
I watched a video of the goal quite a few times before finally realising what I thought were two possible reasons that all three were onside.
1. After the scorer turned away to celebrate, another Aussie defender suddenly appeared in the camera's view, running from near the left touchline and from the goal line. Hard to tell, but it did look as though he had kept them all onside.
2. The main one - it took me a while to work out from the side view that the keeper had anticipated where the ball was heading for and moved to his right, then suddenly moved left back along the goal line. Just after the ball was crossed into the area by the Yank, it bounced off an Aussie defender in amongst a group of players and deflected towards the goal - the defender had tried to block the cross, hence the two who looked offside were actually played onside.
All moot anyway - the Yanks deserved to win and the Aussies deserved nothing.

There was a rouge defender on the near side just playing him on.
Maybe see it implemented here although probably cause all sorts of fuss as any VAR decision does.
The thing that did surprise me was how far "on" the lad was when looking at the graphics, adding weight to your argument.
The Aussies were definitely beaten by the superior side, without question.
